[ Ijn the latter part of the month of May,
/§ We had our first glimpse of the light of day ;
We had slept in a bag on a cupboard shelf,
( A longer time than I know myself ;
J But the farmer said it was planting weather,
And brought all our family out together.
There was little time to enjoy the light,
p For he buried us quickly out of sight,
n One by one in the soft brown earth—
And that is all I know of my birth.
Nourished by warmth and the gentle rain,
We pushed our way towards the sun again ;
We kept one foot in the earthy bed,
And each for a hat, wore his shell on his head.
A mole came burrowing under ground,
And my brother, was one of the first seeds he found.
Then one of my sisters came to grief
From striped winged insects, which ate every leaf.
But the rest of us grew, and stretched ourselves longer,
And spread all our leaves, daily broader and stronger ;
Then the loveliest buds, and great yellow flowers .
While not one in that region had such curls as ours .
The locks of the corn were silky, 'tis true,
But worn banged, with no curls, that ever I knew.
While ours hung in ringlets, all over the vine,
And about all in reach, did most gracefully twine,
When bees sought our pollen, the boys in pursuit
Would pull off the blossom, thus spoiling the fruit,
And sometimes would make with a piece of a stem
A most horrible noise, which was music to them.
Soon pumpkins, as large as an apple were found.
Hidden, under the leaves on the ground.
These grew and waxed ruddier, day after day,
Until we heard Jack Frost, coming that way.
en the farmer gathered many a load,
Which carefully, in his barn was bestowed ;
Some fed the cows — some were made into pies

And some, Jack o'lan terns, with fiery eyes.

Little Madam Gray Mouse,
Lives in a wee house,
About of the size of a bowl ;
The walls are quite thick,
Built strongly of brick,
The entrance is down through a hole

In this snug little house

With their kind Mamma Mouse,
Live her children, one, two, and three,
Twin girls and a boy—
Her pride and her joy—
Good mice as ever need be.
To a fine, select school

Where they mind every rule,

The little girls go day by day ;

They learn German, and French,

Mathematics and Trench,

To dance, and to sing, and to play.

Also Kensington stitch—
And other things— which
Take much of their time every day ;

While their small brother Ben..

A Kindergarten
Attends just over the way.
1
On Saturdays fair,
They all take the air
In the Park, where in winter they
skate,

When the weather grows warm,

Both at sea-side and farm,
They ramble from early till late.

Let us hope that these mice

All brought up so nice
May grow without any mishap,

For a pity 'twould be,0 !

If this cultured trio
Should come to its end in a trap
hoa ! Whoa ! How fast you go !
You should not trot on a bridge, you know,
But ponies cannot read, of course,
And do not know that if a horse
Should go too fast—so reads the sign—
The driver is liable to a fine !
I have no cash with which to pay,
So whoa ! don't run ! Whoa ! Whoa! I say.
ay, will you cut a pole
For me, down by the brook ?
And lend me some ofyour nice bait—j
And a line—and bob—and hook? i

I have a sinker here,

So that is all I wish,
Then I could come and sit by you,
And show you how to fish.
1*-* o you like butter ? pray let me see.
Ah ! your chin is as yellow as yellow can be !
The sign is so plain (if there's anything in it),
I think you are starving to have some this minute
I know, I could eat a large piece if 'twere spread,
On a good crusty slice,
Of my mother's nice bread.
I help my mother all that I can,
She often calls me her little man ;
I run to the store, and bring in the wood,
And many more things would do if I could.

Now I will try, before 'tis too late,

To shovel a pathway down to the gate,
For mamma is going down street, you know,
And she must not walk through all this snow !
Take you on ? why no, indeed ! Oh, dear me ! what a ride !
The thing tipped over on one side !
Girls don't ride velocipede'!
I've torn my clothes, and hurt my
If there were a seat up here,
knee,
You should take a turn my dear.
'Tisn't all fun, I plainly see !

Now stand back and see me run, Nor is it so hard

Oh ! I tell you, this is fun ! For the girls, after all,
Sometimes fast, and sometimes slow ; If they get no ride,
They get no fall .
See me round that corner go !
I
ye golden hearted lilies,
Born beside the river's brink.
Where the gentle patient cattle
Wander down to wade and drink,

Taken from those limped waters

And their cool refreshment sweet,
How your petals droop and languish
In this dusty, heated street !
Lilies, lilies, who'll buy ?
^ye heavy hearted lilies !
jt If with me you deign to come,
'i will bear you to the shelter
Of a quiet little home,
Where, protected from the noontide,
And in vase of crystal fair,
All your joyous bloom expanded,
Shall with fragrance fill the air.
Lilies, lilies, who'll buy ?
f
j ee the beautiful wild rose of summer,
Each blossom and bud has its fay,
To shake out its soft silken petals,
And let in the glad light of day.

w
The butterflies hover around it
mr And great drowsy bumble bees come,
1 To gather its sweet drops of honey,
And play with the elves, in their home.

Dear little Eva, don't be afraid,
Ned is the best goat that ever was made,
Sit at your ease, he will not run away ;
He shall not even start, 'till you say.

He has taken me many a time to ride,

Do not be frightened, I'm by your side ;
We'll trot along gently, and I know you will say,
'Twas the pleasantest trip for many a day.
