9 3 Introduction: In this design portfolio, we going to discuss about mobile game application. Mobile
games play an important role in our daily lives. We play games when we are bored. There are
different categories of mobile games available online. It depends on people’s interest to choose
categories of mobile games. In this section, we will discuss about weakness of existing mobile game
application. i) Loads of advertisement while playing online games: There are tons of mobile games
which can be played online only. We can’t play them offline. So, when we connect our device to
internet, these game applications load lot of advertisement in the middle of game. We can play
some games offline but when mobile device is connected to internet, these offline mobile games
also show advertisement in the middle of the game. So, user will get frustration. Some game
advertisements look like actual game like in above screenshot. Users may feel confusion sometimes.
This can be solved by loading less ads or displaying advertisement when user finishes present level
and about to move to next level. When user finishes present level in game, he or she feels 4 relaxed
after finishing game, if mobile game applications show advertisement in this period, user may not
get too much frustration. ii) No multiplayer games available for innovative mobile games: Most
people would like to play innovative games. These games don’t need too much space and mobile
resources. We can play these games on minimum featured phones also. These games don’t offer
multiplayer options. The above screenshot refers to one of the popular innovative mobile games. It
doesn’t offer multiplayer option. If these games offer multiplayer option, then it would be like a
competition between two players. iii) Too much loading time: Most of the mobile games take too
much time to load before starting game. 5 This gives frustration to the user. Many users don’t feel
alright when they see game taking too much time to load. iv) Most of the games need internet
connection to play: Most user play mobile games when they are travelling to kill the boring time.
Sometimes it is difficult to get mobile internet connection when they are travelling. In this scenario,
it is difficult to play mobile online games. Some users play games only when they are travelling. So,
they don’t keep such types of mobile applications in their mobile phones. These weaknesses cause
serious impact on users. In current design, we focus to minimize these weaknesses and increase the
usability of the mobile game application. Personas and Scenarios: In user-cantered designs, personas
are fictional characters which we create based on our research to represent different user types that
they may use our service or application. 6 Persona 1: Isla (25 years) Characteristics: • She works in a
software company as software developer. • She owns android phone with latest version. • She
spends her free time in social media. • She has been playing video games since her childhood. • She
used to play games on PS4. • She goes for running every morning. • She spends every weekend with
her friends. • She follows the gaming updates online. • She travels a lot on office work. Goals, Needs,
and Impediments: • She installs almost every game from play store just to try. If she finds any
innovative game, she keeps that game in her mobile. Otherwise, she uninstalls that game from her
mobile phone immediately. • She likes to play games which are innovative. • She used to play games
on PS4. Because of her work, she must travel a lot. This situation made her to play games on mobile
phone. While playing games on mobile phone, she doesn’t feel comfortable, and she noticed these
games more kind of quality. • Her goal is to play innovative game on mobile with best User Interface.
Persona 2: John Will (49 years) 7 Characteristics: • Businessman in an automobile industry. • He has
been married for 17 years. He has two children. • He travels a lot for his business. • He plays mobile
games in break time in his office. • He has Facebook account. • He knows how to use computer and
mobile games at expert level. • He owns iPhone 11. • He spends weekend time with his family.
Goals, Needs, and Impediments: • John travels a lot across the globe. Sometimes he must wait at
airport for long hours. To kill his boring time at airport, he plays mobile game. Some games require
internet connection to play them. Sometimes internet may be problem for him when he is abroad. •
While playing games in his break time in his office, He does like waiting for too long to load the
game. He stopped playing some games because of loading time. • He wants a game which doesn’t
take too much time to load and must be run in offline. Persona 3: Louis (62 years) Characteristics: •
Louis is a retired plumber. • He has two children and four grandchildren. • He got a new android
phone for his 60th birthday from his youngest daughter. • He likes to solve puzzles. • He plays
mobile game since he got plenty of time. • He plays card with his friends. • He doesn’t have any
social media accounts. 8 • He watches TV and listen to music on radio. Goals, Needs, and
Impediments: • Louis isn’t good at using mobile phone, he only knows how to download apps from
play store, make call and send instant message. • Louis usually downloads games from play store. He
must ask his family members to delete this game when he doesn’t like downloaded game. • He
doesn’t have internet access. He only uses mobile data. He doesn’t like games when load too many
ads for too long time. • Some games don’t allow him to cancel the ad playing. Since he has low
speed internet connections. The ad videos neither played nor gets cancelled by user. Louis gets
struct in a loop. • He wants a simple logic game and with a simple UI. Scenarios: Scenarios are used
to display the experience and frustrations with current service or application or technology. Scenario
1: John Will, 49, businessman in auto mobile industry. He travels a lot for his business purposes. He
loves his family. He wants to spend most of his time with his family. He loves to play games. He used
to play outdoor games when he was a child. In his office, he spends time to development of the
company. He conducts meetings with staff for every week to know the status of business deals. He
respects every staff member in his office. He travels across the globe for the development of his
business. Once he was in abroad and he must wait at airport for next flight. He got three hours of
time. He was feeling bored. He just wanted to kill his boring time by playing mobile games. He
opened a mobile game on his mobile phone. But that game wants an active internet connection to
play. But he does not want to connect to airport public Wi-Fi since his mobile contains information
regarding his business plans and ideas. He is afraid of hackers. He opened other game. But other
game taking too much time to load. He fed up with these games and stopped playing games at that
airport. He just went to bookstore and bought a magazine to pass his boring time. He likes playing
games on mobile phone, but games aren’t supporting him when he has time to play games. He
wants a simple mobile game application which does not require internet access and does not take
too much time to load the game. Scenario 2: Louis, 62, retired plumber. He stays home all the time.
Sometimes he goes out to meet his friends on weekends. He likes to play with his grandchildren.
During daytime, they go to school, He feels bored when they go to school. He doesn’t know how to
spend his time. He gets entertainment from TV and radio only. He got an android mobile phone on
his 60th birthday from his youngest daughter. 9 In his phone, he plays mobile games. He downloads
new games whenever he feels bored with old games. If he doesn’t understand the game logic, he
uninstalls the game. But he doesn’t know how to uninstall game from his mobile. He must ask
someone to uninstall game from his mobile phone. One day, he downloaded a game, he started
playing it. Suddenly game started playing ad video, but video wasn’t loading because of slow
internet connection and mobile game doesn’t allowing him to go back. He doesn’t know what to do.
He got struct at that point. He feels it is so annoying. He wants a mobile game which is so simple in
logic and doesn’t play any ad videos. He feels it would be better if mobile game plays text ads or
image ads instead of video ads since they need less internet data. Current Design: Based on the
needs of the users, we can focus on the features of the futures game. We must focus on following
features: • The game logic must be simple and easy to play. • The game shouldn’t load too many
ads. • It shouldn’t play video ads instead it can play text ads or image ads. • It should support
multiplayer option. • The game must work offline. • The game must be available for different
platforms since there are android users and iOS users. • UI of the game must be simple and clear.
Working in Brief: This game is so simple in logic. The title of game is Even n Odd. In this game, we
check the sum of numbers is odd or even. On starting this game on mobile, first it shows loading
page. It doesn’t take too much time to loading since it is a small size mobile application. It doesn’t
require more mobile requirements. It can run in small featured mobile. After loading, the home
screen of the game will be displayed. It shows options like play, multiplayer, and exit. If you want to
play alone, you must select play option. On selecting play, it will display the jars with numbers in it.
Top number in jar is the sum of the numbers in that jar. If the number of numbers in jar is equal to
even number, then sum of numbers must be even number. If the number of numbers in jar is equal
to odd numbers, then sum of numbers in jar must be equal to odd number. This is the main logic in
game. To make changes, first tap on one of the numbers in one jar and next tap on another number
in another jar then those two numbers will be swapped. We must swap numbers until it reaches our
criteria. If sum does not meet the criteria, it will be in red colour. If sum of numbers meets the
criteria, then the sum number will be displayed in green colour. On finishing levels, the no of jars will
be increased, and difficulty also will be increased in this game to make game interesting. Help icon is
present on the top right corner of the screen. It is used to get suggestions from the game
application. Exit icon is present at top left corner of the screen. It is used to exit the game. 10 In
multiplayer option, two users play same game on their mobiles by connecting through Bluetooth. In
multiplayer game, the screen shows timer below of it. The one who finishes the game first, will be
the winner. After winning the game, it displays the congratulation pop up on the screen. On this pop,
it asks users to select next level or exit. If select next level, it goes to next level. On selecting exit
option, it exits the game. This game does not show too many ads. It shows less ads which are in text
or image form. It doesn’t show any video ads. There is a clear button on ads pop up to close the ads.
This makes users comfortable to close the ads. Prototyping: Prototyping is draft version of product,
which explains the features of our application. There are three types of prototyping. Those are low-
fidelity prototyping, medium-fidelity prototyping, and high-fidelity prototyping. For this application,
we are going to use low-fidelity prototyping and medium-fidelity prototyping. Low-fidelity
prototyping: These are often paper based. It doesn’t allow user interactions. These are easy to
create. These take less time to create. For this mobile game application, following is the low fidelity
prototype. This is paper based prototype. Fig.1 Game Loading 11 When user select Even n Odd game
on his mobile phone. It displays the loading screen as shown in above figure. This game doesn’t take
too much time to load since it is a small mobile game application. After loading game, the home
page of the game will be displayed like below figure. Fig 2, Home Screen There are three options in
game. Those are play, multiplayer and exit. After clicking play button, it will take us to following
screen. Fig 3, Game Screen 12 This is the main part in Even n Odd game. In the above screen it shows
two jars with numbers. The top numbers in each jar represent the sum of the number in the jar.
There are three numbers in left jar excluding top number and two numbers in right jar excluding the
top number. In the left jar, there are three numbers, it is an odd number so the sum of these
numbers must be equal to odd number but in the above situation, it is even number. On the other
hand, there are two numbers in right jar. The sum of numbers is odd number, but it must be equal to
even number. We need to swap numbers according to this situation. Now, we are going to swap
numbers, to match the situation. To swap numbers, we need to select one number in one jar and
select another number in another jar then both numbers will be swapped. Fig 4, Finished Game In
the above situation, we selected two from left side jar and one from right jar. So, these two numbers
are swapped. After swapping, the application again checks the condition, sum of numbers from the
left side jar is odd number and number of numbers in the left side jar is odd number. The condition is
met for left side jar. Now it checks condition for right side jar. The sum of numbers in right side jar is
even and number of numbers in the right jar is even number. For this jar also, condition is met. Now
condition is met for every jar. So, it displays congratulations pop on the screen like below. 13 Fig 5,
Finished Game On congratulation pop, there are buttons for next level and exit. If we select next
level it will take us to next level and exit button will help us to exit the game. In next level, the
difficulty of the game will be increased by increasing the number of jars. This will make the game
more interesting for the player. On home page of the game, if we select multiplayer option, it will
take us to following page. This is also like single player game, but it displays timer at the bottom of
the screen. 14 Fig 6, Multiplayer game Medium-fidelity prototype: Following are the medium-fidelity
prototype for the Even n Odd mobile game application. 15 The above screen is loading page of the
application. This one is home screen of the game application. 16 This is game screen. In above
screen, the top numbers are red in colour since the conditions are not met. After swapping numbers,
the screen will become like below. 17 Now the top numbers are in green colour since the conditions
are met. The top right icon is for help and the top left corner icon is to exit the game. After finishing
the game, it will display congratulation pop up message on screen. From this pop-up message, we
can go to next level or exit the game. This game also shows ads but less which are in the form of text
or image only. 18 The following screen is of multiplayer game. 19 Conclusion: In conclusion, we can
say that we have developed prototype of Even n Odd simple mobile game applications based on the
personas and scenarios. In the given scenarios, they faced situation like not able to play offline, not
able close video advertisement when internet speed is low. This mobile game applications provides
features like simple UI to so anyone can understand the application, multiplayer option for
innovative games, it shows less ads, simple in logic so anyone can play it, it can be played offline. The
logic of the game is also simple, so even senior citizens also can play the game.
