1. Kungliga Operan

2. Operan, eller Kungliga Operan, är scenen där alla operasångare och balettdansare
drömmer om att uppträda. Det är Sveriges nationalscen för båda dessa konstformer.

3. Operan är belägen i centrala Stockholm, och den nuvarande byggnaden byggdes i slutet
av 1800-talet. Men operans historia går ända tillbaka till sent 1700-tal, då den grundades
av Gustav III. Den första operan på svenska sattes upp där år 1773.

4. Det ursprungliga operahuset började byggas 1775 och blev klart 1782. Byggnaden
ritades av Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz och var en symbol för upplyst absolutism. Den hade en
portik i korintisk tetrastil, med fyra statyer och en bild av kronan på toppen. Auditoriet var
ovalt och hade en otrolig sikt och fantastisk akustik för sin tid.

5. Den gamla byggnaden revs 1882 för att göra plats för en ny byggnad. Den nya
byggnaden ritades av Axel Johan Anderberg och tog sju år att slutföra. Kung Oscar II
invigde den. En av de stora skillnaderna i den nya byggnaden var tillägget av orden
”Kungl. Teatern”, som betyder ”Kungliga teatern”. Numera kallas den kort och gott

1. The Royal Swedish Opera

2. Operan, the Royal Swedish Opera, is the place where all opera singers and ballet
dancers dream of performing. It is Sweden's national stage for both of these art forms.

3. Located in downtown Stockholm, the current building actually dates from the late 1800s.
However, the opera company's history dates all the way back to the late 1700s, when
King Gustav III founded it. The company performed the first opera in Swedish there in
1773.

4. Construction on the original opera house began in 1775 and was completed in 1782.
The building was designed by Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz and was essentially a symbol of
enlightened absolutism. It had a portico done in Corinthian tetrastyle, with four statues
and an image of the crown on top of it all. The auditorium was oval and for its day had
incredible sight lines and amazing acoustics.

5. In 1882 the old building was knocked down so a new building could replace it. The new
design was done by Axel Johan Anderberg and took seven years to complete. King
Oscar II inaugurated it. One of the major distinctions of the new building was the addition
of the words "Lungl. Teatern," which means "Royal Theatre." The locals refer to it as
Operan, which translates as "opera."

6. The current building has arches in the façade and is an example of neo-classical
architecture. The foyer was done in gold and has a majestic marble staircase leading up
to the auditorium. The theater seats twelve hundred people and is a bit smaller than the
auditorium in the previous building.

7. Guided tours of the opera house are available Saturday afternoons with tickets available
at the entrance. Most of the productions by the Royal Swedish Opera and the Royal
Swedish Ballet are performed in the original language, although Swedish subtitles are
generally included.

CULTURAL INSIGHT

A Tragic Opera

Kung Gustav III, som beslutade om uppförandet av den ursprungliga operan var en ganska
intressant karaktär. Han avskedade den franska truppen som hade uppträtt i Stockholm i
många år och tog in tyska och italienska kompositörer för att skapa operor från svenska
dikter. År 1792 mördades kungen på operan, och Verdi skrev Un Ballo in Maschera,
inspirerad av den händelsen. Kungens son stängde operan eftersom han inte tyckte om
tanken att den plats där hans far dödades var en plats för rekreation och nöjen. Operan
öppnades inte igen förrän han avsattes 1809.

King Gustav III, who commissioned the original opera, was quite an interesting character. He
fired the French group that had been performing in Stockholm for many years and brought in
German and Italian composers to create operas from Swedish poems. In 1792 the king was
assassinated at the opera, and Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera was inspired by that event. The
king's son shut down the opera because he did not like the thought that the place where his
father was killed was a place of recreation and amusement. The opera was not reopened
until he was deposed in 1809.
