1. Utvandrarna

2. Utvandrarna är en svensk film om en grupp svenskar som emigrerar till Minnesota i

mitten av 1850-talet. Jan Troell regisserade filmen som kom ut 1971 och är baserad på
två romaner av Vilhelm Moberg. Romanerna är de första böckerna i Utvandrarserien. Liv
Ullmann och Max von Sydow spelar huvudrollerna i filmen, men bland skådespelarna
finns även Monica Zetterlund, Allan Edwall och Eddie Axberg vilka återkom till
uppföljaren Nybyggarna. Berättelsen tar sin början i ett litet samhälle, strax efter att ett
ungt par har gift sig.

3. De får svåra problem med vädret och sina grödor. Familjen är så hungrig att parets
äldsta barn stjäl mat som inte är säker att ätas och dör följaktligen. Detta leder till att
familjen beslutar sig för att tillsammans med andra bondefamiljer att emigrera till USA.

4. Mycket av filmen fokuserar på båtresan till USA, som alla ser som ett "förlovat land" där
de kan tjäna sitt uppehälle. Inte alla som stiger på skeppet kommer att stiga av det igen.
Filmen visar det hårda livet och döden på den 10-veckor långa resan som de resande
hoppas kommer att ta dem till ett bättre ställe. Filmen följer sedan resans andra del, som
tar dem från Atlantkusten till den delen av USA som kallas Minnesota.

1. The Emigrants

2. The Emigrants is a Swedish movie about a group of Swedes who emigrate to Minnesota
some time around the mid-1950s. Jan Troell directed the film, which came out in 1971
and is based on two novels by Vilhelm Moberg. The novels were the first in the
Emigrants Suite series. Liv Ullmann and Max von Sydow led the cast, which also
included Monica Zetterlund, Allan Edwall, and Eddie Axberg and re-appeared the
following year in the sequel The New Land.

3. The story starts in a small town in the southern part of Sweden not long after a young
couple has married. They end up in dire straits because of a chain of disasters related to
the weather and the quality of the land they are trying to farm. Their family is so hungry
that the couple's eldest child sneaks food that isn't safe to eat and consequently dies.
This prompts them to join other farm families in emigrating to the U.S.

4. Much of the film focuses on the journey by ship to get to the U.S., which all imagine as a
"promised land" where they can prosper. Not everyone who steps onto the ship will step
off it again. The film first shows the hardships and deaths of a 10-week voyage that the
characters hope will lead them to a better place. It then depicts the second leg of their
journey, which takes them from the Atlantic to the part of the U.S. now known as
Minnesota.

CULTURAL INSIGHT

Nothing to Complain About

Utvandrarna togs emot väl av de flesta kritikerna, framförallt hyllades de två

huvudrollsinnehavarna Liv Ullmann och Max von Sydow. Ett av få klagomål var att filmen
visade alltför många klipp med ljus som reflekteras över vatten. Filmen nominerades i fem
Oscarskategorier: Bästa utländska film, Bästa foto, Bästa kvinnliga huvudrollsinnehavare och
Bäst regissör. Filmen vann även Golden Globes för Bästa skådespelerska och Bästa
utländska film, samt Guldbaggen för Bästa skådespelare och Bästa film.

The Emigrants was very well received, with most critics heaping praise on the cast, especially

the two leads played by Liv Ullmann and Max von Sydow. One of the few complaints about
the film was that it contained too many shots of light reflecting on the water. The film received
nods for five categories at the Academy Awards, including Best Foreign Language Film, Best
Picture, Best Leading Actress, and Best Director. It also won Golden Globes for Best Actress
and Best Foreign Language Film, as well as Guldbagge Awards for both Best Actor and Best
Film.
