1.1. History
In 1950, "Faculty of Geography" Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is one of the departments in
Faculty of Literature, Paedogogik, and Philosophy UGM, Department name at that time was the
Department of Earth Sciences. In 1956, this faculty was renamed became Faculty of Literature and
Culture UGM. At that time the Department of Earth Sciences is growing rapidly, and the role of
experts became evident in the Earth Sciences and its wider development of their work, until finally
Faculty of Literature and Culture Department allowed Earth Sciences UGM turned into Faculty of
Geography. A decree changes the Department of Earth Sciences became Faculty of Geography, dated
1 September 1963 (here in after the 1st of September is celebrated as the birth of the Faculty of
Geography). Once open, the faculty has two departments, the Department of Physical Geography and
Human Geography.
In line with scientific developments and the demands of society, in the 1980s Faculty of Geography
develop themselves to manage 3 courses with 7 Study Program (Prodi), namely:
a. Department of Physical Geography, has geomorphology and Land Resources Program and
Hydrology Program.
b. Department of Human Geography, has Population and Labor Program, and Settlement and
Resources Program.
c. Geography Department of Engineering, has Cartography and Remote Sensing Program
d. Transmigration and Development Plan Area Program which is jointly managed under the control
of the Dean.
In 1991 the Faculty of Geography made improvements names of majors and courses, by making
Transmigration and Development Planning Area Program into a separate department. Thus in the
1990s, there were four departments which are under the management of the Faculty of Geography.
The majors are:
a. Physical Geography Department have Physical Geography Program,
b. Department of Human Geography have Human Geography Program,
c. Department of Cartography and Remote Sensing have Cartography and Remote Sensing Program,
and
d. Department of Urban Development Areas Planning have Area Development Program.
Drastic changes occurred in 1995, namely by melting all the program became the geography with four
interest. Four interest is a representation of the majors in the previous period, they are Physical
Geography, Human Geography, Cartography and Remote Sensing, and Regional Development
Planning.
In line with the era of reform and decentralization as well as respond to the practical interests to meet
the actual needs of the market and the development of science, then in 2001/2002, UGM Senate
meeting decided that the Faculty of Geography reopen the study programs that have been merged,
they are: Physical Geography and Environment Program, Human Geography Program, Cartography
Since the release of the Minister of National Education Decree No. 1/2006 which authorizes UGM to
open and close the study program, the faculty fix themselves by making efficiency refers to the
development of science and the demands of society. Starting in 2007 the Faculty of Geography have 3
program at undergraduate level (S1), they are 1) Geography and Environmental Science Program, 2)
Cartography and Remote Sensing Program, and 3) Regional Development Program. It should be
noted that the Geography and Environmental Science Program is a merger from Physical and
Environmental Geography and Human Geography Program. With this restructuring is expected
Faculty of Geography in the future challenging to grow synergistically with reference to the vision of
science and labor market needs in an efficient and competitive organization that is adequate.
Associated with the implementation of qualification courses that refer to certain standards, then the
National Accreditation Board has so far provide an assessment of the three study programs that are
under the management of the Faculty of Geography with an A (superior).
In a way, the Faculty of Geography has been led by a competent elected figure, so delivering this
institution today. Dean of the faculty from the beginning until now:

Table 1.1. Department and Studies Program S1 level at Faculty of Geography UGM
Card study plan consists of three pieces with different colors to show the relevance of certain parties,
namely:
a. White sheets for the students concerned, serves as proof to attend academic activities and other
purposes related to the student;
b. Light green sheets for academic lecturers, serves as a control of the lecturer to student guidance;
c. Blue sheets for Academic and Student Affairs Section, serves as the authentic data to the format
of supervision, primarily associated with the activity. SPC thus serves as an instrument of
supervision and control of the learning process in higher education.
For new students throughout the courses in semester 1 and 2 the number of credits is determined by
the package, namely Geography and Environmental Science Study Program 23 credits and 23 credits.
For the next semester study load is determined based on the number (GPA) obtained in the previous
semester. The GPA conversion and the burden of learning can be seen in Table 2.1.
The courses that can be taken by someone inserts students in exams and final exams courses are only
listed in SPC. Values obtained from the evaluation of test scores inserts, final exams, and the value of
a series of activities, such as writing an essay / paper, homework, class participation, field and lab
reports are required.
The ideal time for in preparing the examination schedule is 45 days before examination begin with
these details:
a. making of schedule inventory, during 15 days
b. duplicating and the sending of examination schedule to the lecturers, in 10 days
c. socialization to students in 20 days
The examination’s committee which already made according to Dean SK given the full authority in
doing their jobs under the coordination of Vice Dean of Academic and Student Affairs. The
implementation of committee assignments will be determined before the examination is held
according to coordination meeting of examination committee.
2.5.3.2. The Preparation of Questions Documents
In order that the implementation of the examination runs well, Academic and Students Affair Section
need to do claiming of the question documents with these steps:
a. make a letter of command to make question documents that have signature from Vice Dean of
Academic and Student Affair,
b. the clearance of every question, like : 1) open or close book, 2) duration of time, 3) examination
equipments may be used, 4) done in different paper or not (for some questions),
c. the information of the deadline of the question documents, the best time is 3 x 24 hours before
the examination begin.
a. in duplicating questions, must be prepared enough security tools so that those question
documents is not easy to be seen by other people. The duplicating place better be sterile from
the routine business to guarantee the confidentiality,
b. after the examination is done, the question documents as well as the answers paper better be
arrange same as the date of the examination, so that doesn’t cause overlaying that will make the
quick taking uneasy.
The test room is determined in conjunction with the preparation of the exam schedule. In preparing
the exam room, including prepared following matters:
a. Preparation of test numbers in the test seat.
b. Preparation of test numbers at the entrance to the exam room.
c. Sterilization of the exam room.
In arranging the room can use the distance to the side or back of the seat difference depending on
the number of examinees in a particular subject, but in general the distance to the side is adrift.
Changes in the examination room of the allocation as stated in the exam schedule can be done only if
there is a justifiable reason.
The scoring system used is a relative assessment system. Relative scoring system is the system used to
assess a student intellectual ability relative to other students in the class. Values were recorded in the
value of a student is a measure of the students' ability to outperform other students. This means that
the value given to a student in the test is a measure of achievement relative to the achievement of all
students in the test.
Assessment of lecturers who submitted to the academic section is the numerical value of each
component is assessed and a letter grade from the average of all components. Conversion from the
numerical value to a letter grade do megikuti Table 2.2.
Stated in the student study success (GPA). To calculate the GPA, the value of letters are given
appropriate weight in the form of numbers following table.
Examination score is a product of teaching and learning activities are indispensable and it relates to
the learning and teaching next semester. speed and the accuracy of the value entered for Academic
and Student Section indispensable. To that end, Academics and Student Affairs must be proactive in
collecting both formal and informal. Billing formally done orally or in writing. Orally performed at
the event Working Meeting of the Faculty (RKF) or graduated meetings and others.
It conditions based on the decision of the rector of the processing of exam results is as following:
a. The beam delivery exam results with the examiners no later than one day after the test is
completed.
b. Delivery correction by the lecturer to the Section of Academic and Student Affairs no later than
12 days after the relevant subjects completed tested. If after the time-out, and given 3 days
additional opportunity has not completed its assessment, the Chairman of the Department and
Chairman Study Program, will conduct joint correction or replacement corrector appointed by
the Chairman Programs, and given 3 days. If in this case can not be done / completed, then
value B will be given to students. Students may appeal to the value B accompanied by
convincing evidence, for example, most of the other subjects got an A in the semester. For
lecturers who violates this provision shall receive sanctioned according to the rules.
KHS is an information that contains the name of the course, semester credit units, course grades and
grade obtained by the students in a certain semester.
CSR is processed by the Section of Academic and Student Affairs and printed in 4 (four), each for:
a. Students concerned
b. Academic lecturers
c. Student's parent / trustee
d. Files.
To allow students to meet these conditions, there should be monitoring and coaching. Step-by-step
guidance to be taken are:
a. Conduct an inventory of the condition of students who are having problems with their study as
coaching materials Academic Supervisor.
b. Giving a warning letter to the students.
c. Provide special handling for students who study period is almost exhausted.
After going through the stages of development, but students still have not been able to finish his
studies, then there are two (2) alternatives:
If the results of the evaluation board of the faculty to a student that the student has been unable to
be extended studies, the steps that must be taken are:
1) Make a proposed letter of resignation to the rector who accompanied students study history
is concerned.
2) Delivering the approval decision letter of resignation or drop out of the rector and rector SK
sends to the parents / guardians of the student attached a list of subjects that value ever
reached.
3) The student may apply for other certificates deemed necessary.
Research proposal that have been approved by the supervisor and examiner used as a basis in
preparation of the thesis.
2.9.3. Advisor
Advisors appointed by the Chairman of the Department and shall be stipulated by the Dean of the
Faculty of Geography, after the student obtains at least 90 credits. Once a student receives a
Lecturer, Guardian Lecturer duties transferred to the Supervisor. Students can propose candidates of
guardian lecturer thesis.
In the settlement of a student thesis guided by a maximum of two mentors consisting of: a) Senior
Advisor, b) Senior Advisor and Advisor Companion or, c) Senior Advisor and Assistant Advisor.
Senior Advisors is a lecturer responsible and fully entitled to lead the student in the preparation of
the thesis according to the field of science. Supervising Companion is a lecturer appointed if in
preparation of the thesis related to other sciences. Supervising Companion full right to direct
students in preparing their thesis in accordance science ruled, for his direction does not conflict with
the Main Supervisor.
Research Proposal exam organized by the Department concerned, while the thesis examination
organized by the Faculty.
Thesis Examination material consists of: the contents of the thesis, research methods, language,
writing systematic, supporting components, mastery of the material, and the ability to deliver
exposure to oral exam.
Proposed exam can study and recommended attended by other students who are interested in the
topic of research.
Final exams can be held if attended by:
a. Students concerned
b. Testers test research proposal
c. And an examiner from other departments as members
d. Senior Advisors as Chairman of the Testing Team.
If in Advisors Team there is Advisors Assistants or companion advisor, and is unable to
attend, the test can still be implemented.
If the team of examiners from other departments are unable to attend, then the thesis
examination could not be carried out.
When one member of the test team was unable to attend should be replaced by a lecturer
from the same study program designated by the department on the proposed program of
study in order to meet the minimum number of testers 3.
If the Chairman Tester team was unable to attend anyway, it can be appointed his
successor by the faculty on the proposed course of study, is unable to attend remains is if
the Lead Tester:
a. Die.
b. Due to something that has been inactive for three months or more.
For students who at the time of thesis examination do not meet the minimum of 144 credits
(including thesis) for one thing, so if the student passed the thesis examination, does not mean that
the relevant graduate degree. Undergraduate graduation is determined by the date of the decision
issued by the value of the subject that causes loss of credits occurs (in this case the value of
Community Service). Ratification graduation yudisium made during the meeting.
Determining graduation yudisium done in meetings held at least 25 days before the graduation
ceremony for students and predicate certify graduation.
Not all paper can be published, but must have a recommendation from Thesis Testing Team.
