Same-Sex Marriage: The Moral Standards of Filipinos towards the LGBTQ+ Community

In this paper, I’ll discuss and dissect the moral standards of Filipinos towards the LGBTQ+

Community—especially in regards with same-sex marriage—through different perspective and

contexts. The national issue of whether the state should pass a bill that allows same-sex couples

to get married have been a heated debate in the Philippines for a long time. And it had gain a

major resurgence during present times as the month of June—recognized by the United States’

Government as “LGBTQ+ Pride Month”—had just started. The paper will use various ethical

theories, laws, and articles in the endeavor to analyze, answer, and offer possible solutions in: (1)

understanding the Philippines’ moral standards and values in-general, (2) the state of the

country’s acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community, (3) recognizing the difference between

marriage and civil unions, (4) the civil rights of the members of the LGBTQ+ community, (5)

should the Philippines allow same-sex marriage and how they ought to do so, and lastly (6) what

Filipinos ought to do moving forward. I will begin with a description of the first three points, and

aim to establish a good understanding of the Filipinos moral standards and values, their nuanced

acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community, and the difference between marriage and civil union.

Next, I shall present the arguments of those in favor and against same-sex union along with the

legal contexts of said issue. And lastly, I will present my own conclusions and claims as to
whether the Philippines should allow their marriage or union and what Filipinos ought to do

moving forward.
