TUTORIAL UNIT 3.

3 METALLIC BONDING (ANSWERS)

1. What is metallic bonding?

Force of attraction between delocalised electrons and the positive centres of the
nucleus

2. What is Electron Sea Model?

Model of metallic bonding in which positive metal ions are considered to be in fixed
position surrounded by a body of delocalised electrons.

3. What factor(s) that determine the strength of metallic bonding?

i) Size of the atom
ii) Positive charge on nucleus
iii) Number of valence electron

4. Arrange in ascending order of strength of metallic bonding in the following metals:

Na, Mg, Cu
Explain your answer.
Arrangement: Na, Mg, Cu
Explanation: Na the weakest since the valence electron is the lowest, Mg is
stronger than Na because has more valence electron and smaller atomic size than
Na. Cu has the strongest metallic bonds since it has the most valence electron is 4s &
3d orbitals.

5. Aluminium and chromium are metals. Compare the two metals in term of melting point
and electrical conductivity. Explain your answer.
Chromium / Cr has higher melting point and electrical conductivity than aluminium
/ Al. Cr has stronger metallic bond than Al. This is due to the higher valence
electron in Cr than Al. Cr has 6 valence electron from 3d and 4s orbitals whereas Al
only has 3 valence electron.

6. State two method to improve properties of metals. Explain your answer with an example.

Method: Alloying / Electroplating / Anodising

Explanation: Alloying increase the resistance to corrosion, tensile strength and
become light in weight for example titanium-aluminium-vanadium /
Electroplating increase resistance to corrosion and improve decorative and aesthetic
value of metal. Example gold plating or silver plating /
Anodising increase hardness, resistance to corrosion and abrasion. Example
anodising of aluminium.
