Module 3
Hello, everyone! | welcome you all to the video review of the module on curatorship! | am ma’am Judy, and |
am here to help sum it all up for everyone! It sure was quite a short topic but | hope it was still able to impress
upon everyone the valuable impact to the society of the profession of curatorship and the many curators
behind the scenes.
First up, we all defined what curatorship is all about. As a working definition for the term curatorship, we said
that itis the act of selecting, organizing, and presenting objects for display. From this, we could already figure
ut that what basically happens is that the curators are the ones responsible for bringing the arts of many
different artists and artisans to us.
Aside from bringing the arts to us, the curators are also the ones responsible for taking good care of the
artworks that they are to present to the public. There are even times wherein the art curators are the ones who
restore artworks as well from their dilapidated conditions to looking brand new again. The sad thing though is.
that the curators are under appreciated, especially in countries that are not too keen on the arts like the
Philippines. Art curating may have been a fairly new profession if you will base it from the history of Art but it
has already made some great impacts when it comes to preserving history of mankind,
(One of the major requirements to be a curator is that one must be able to interpret artworks as well, which we
are going to discuss in the next module after this. Aside from collecting and organizing exhibits for people to
see, another role of the curator is to become a teacher and educate the public regarding the artworks that are
in the collection or exhibit
We may ask, how does a curator even have anything to begin with? First of all, a curator must be a great
marketer too and must have a wide connection of various arts people, from the smallest to the biggest artists,
and artisans. Sometimes, it is like a snowball. You know the concept of a snowball wherein it rolis and picks up
more snow along the way and it gets bigger? It's like that for building connections with people. It's not really as
easy as it may seem to other people. | said that they are supposed to be great marketers too primarily because
they will have to negotiate with artists and artisans about the acquisition, loaning, or possible sale of their
artworks. And when that happens, a curator must also make sure that the place of exhibit, such as the
museum, will also earn some profit in the process. Yes, money is always involved in the arts, too!
What we can get from this is that the curators primarily impact the work of art and its artists or artisans, the
public as they are bringing this artworks for the consumption and education of the viewing public, and the
museum or place of exhibit, as they are the ones who have the job of keeping everything fresh! Museums
cannot only have one type of collection and just have the same display forever. They have to evolve too
according with the times. It must be able to acquire and collect newer artworks to display every now and then.
‘And it is up to the curator to deal with that as it could help maintain or increase the profitability of the museum.
As we see, the work of the curator is not really as easy as it may seem and a lot of times, due to the cutthroat
nature of the arts industry, being a curator takes some serious dedication and love for what they do. Its true
that the pay for this kind of work may not be as lucrative as compared to other professions, but the impact that
curators have for the society cannot be understated as well. As the human society evolves, so do
professions... so do curators.
We hope that at the very least, you have found some fresh appreciation and love for these people. We are not
saying that we should praise them, but to at least appreciate and recognize them. Museum visits could be fun
too, you know! The museum aesthetic is sometimes hard to top as it provides a different kind of experience for
everyone. That has been it for the video review of our module on curatorship. This has been ma'am Judy and |
thank you all for listening and always remember to stay safe! See you on the next modules!
