Today’s construction industry is looking for
Innovative Materials...

...that meet the challenges and concerns of

the changing world.
¾ History and Overview of ICF
Technology
History of ICF Technology
Werner Gregori created the
foam ICF concept in the mid
1960’s as a foundation material
utilizing the exceptional
insulation properties of the EPS
and the structural strength of
concrete.
ICF Technology Overview
ICF Technology
• The ICF industry has grown 4,000%
over the past decade and is now
growing roughly 25% per year.
• 20% of all ICFs are used in the
commercial market.
• It is estimated
that by 2020
approximately
40% of the
commercial
market will be
built out of ICFs.
¾ Details of “Nudura” – Insulated
Concrete Forms
Details of NUDURA
ƒ ICFs (Insulated Concrete Forms) consist of two panels of
foam insulating material typically manufactured of expanded
(EPS) polystyrene beads.

ƒ Inside and outside panels of insulation are held together

with cross ties or “webs” creating a block or “form unit”.
Function of cross ties or webs is to resist concrete pressures
within the wall during concrete placement.

¾ Installation of Nudura ICFs
Forms are set…
Form units are stacked similar to building blocks to the required
building dimensions.
Reinforcing steel added…
Reinforcing steel is placed according
to the design requirements into
notches provided by the webbing.
Concrete placement rate should not exceed 4’ of
lift per hour (per ACI 304 and CAN/CSA A23.1 for
proper placement of concrete)

Factors that affect speed of concrete placement:

Slump of concrete
Size of aggregate
Air temperature
Concrete temperature
Rebar size and spacing
Concrete mix design
Alignment Systems
NUDURA’s Alignment System is made up of four components

Box channel Cat walk bracket

Guard rail post

Adjustable diagonal brace

¾ Features and Benefits
of Nudura ICFs
Features and Benefits
NUDURA Integrated Building Technology’s flexible design
capabilities allow for innovative building concepts while allowing for
cost competitive construction. NUDURA Insulated Concrete Forms
contribute to more areas of the LEED program than any other
building product.

We can achieve a total of 23 LEED points in the categories of:

ENERGY AND ATMOSPHERE (11 points)

MATERIALS AND RESOURCES (6 points)
INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY (2 points)
INNOVATION & DESIGN (4 points)
Features and Benefits
Folding forms
Reduce shipping costs
by over 40%
Reduce block damage
Reduce job site labor
Reduce on site storage

Wrapped bundles keeps

Benefits and Specifications
Energy Efficiency
ƒ Lack of thermal bridging, thermal mass, and the
virtually elimination of air infiltration are key,
measurable, and significant benefits of ICF.

ƒ Up to 50% heating cost savings.

ƒ Thermal resistance of R22.4 (RSI 3.89) – 6”

(150mm) form unit with performance equivalent to
frame walls insulated to R40 - R50.
Benefits and Specifications
ƒ Sound Transmission
ƒ 6” concrete core provides a Sound
Transmission Class Rating of 50 to
52 (ASTM E336 & E413)
ƒ Two Kentucky hotels built with ICF
construction have been repeat
winners of “National Customer
Satisfaction” awards.
ƒ Quieter homes provided a greater
level of overall comfort.
Benefits and Specifications
ƒ Structural Stability
ƒ Greater impact resistance against
hurricane and tornado damaging winds
and debris.
ƒ Wall designs with wind loads in excess
of 250 MPH.
ƒ Solid monolithic concrete wall can be
designed to meet seismic requirements
more easily than concrete block.
Safety and Security by Design

„ Explosion tests
conducted by
Department of
Defense and ICFA
„ Charges equal to
100 lbs. TNT
detonated at
distances of 10 to 40
feet away
Safety and Security by Design

„ ICF material
damaged but
integrity of the
concrete wall
still intact
9Construction Cost and Schedule
ƒ Construction Costs
ƒ Installed cost will vary depending on the project
details and factors such as labor rates, site
conditions, wall heights, steel requirements, number
of openings, etc.
ƒ Commercial installation cost of Nudura ICF forms are
competitive and some recent projects were less than
an 8” CMU wall assemblies when comparable
finishes were required.
ƒ With rising energy cost, any additional construction
costs are being reclaimed in fewer years.
9Construction Schedule

ƒCMU Construction
equals 0.11 man hours
ƒICF Construction
equals 0.039 man
hours
ƒReduced labor costs
ƒReduced number of
sub-trades
ƒLess potential
scheduling delays
9 Shortened Construction Schedule

North American Code Approvals

™ Meets or exceeds energy and

structural requirements of Building
Officials Code Administration (BOCA)
International Building Code (IBC)
International Residential Code (IRC)
Code Approvals
ƒ Fire / Flammability Resistance
ƒ Non-combustible self extinguishing materials

ƒ Mandatory flame retardant in all foam plastic insulation (bromine)

ƒ Flame spread 5
ƒ Smoke Developed 300 (from UL File R5817(A))

ƒ Code dictates all foam plastics be protected with a thermal barrier

ƒ Exteriors of multi storey buildings must be protected from flame

propagation
ƒ Flame ignition temperature of 698°F and self ignition temperature
of 806°F in accordance with ASTM D1929
ƒ Concrete core provides a fire resistance rating of up to 4 hours.
