Read the descriptions of each item and determine the author’s main purpose (to
entertain, persuade, inform, or instruct). Then, in a sentence or two, explain your
answer.
1. A story about a family who went on a camping trip and got lost in the woods. The
family was struggling to survive and had to encounter many obstacles and almost
fell into the river. The family’s strong bond and spirit have helped them to endure all
the troubles and finally was saved by a ranger in the forest.

2. A section in a history book describes the condition and causes of the failure of the
Malacca Empire in 1511. The Portuguese had attempted to conquer Malacca many
times but failed. Finally, the Portuguese succeeded when they bribed an insider of
the fortress who opened the main gate allowing the Portuguese army to attack the
state. The Malaccan army was unprepared for the surprise attack and the invasion.

5. A story written about a young girl who lost her parents in a car accident and being
adopted by a wealthy family. At first, she struggled to fit into the family but after a
few years of living together under one roof, she finally accepted the family like her
own. Her personality changed completely from being a humble village girl to a
snobbish and arrogant posh girl.
