    Activity 1 – Author’s Purpose

    Read the descriptions of each item and determine the author’s main purpose (to
    entertain, persuade, inform, or instruct). Then, in a sentence or two, explain your
    answer.

    1. A story about a family who went on a camping trip and got lost in the woods. The
    family was struggling to survive and had to encounter many obstacles and almost
    fell into the river. The family’s strong bond and spirit have helped them to endure all
    the troubles and finally was saved by a ranger in the forest.

    2. A section in a history book describes the condition and causes of the failure of the
    Malacca Empire in 1511. The Portuguese had attempted to conquer Malacca many
    times but failed. Finally, the Portuguese succeeded when they bribed an insider of
    the fortress who opened the main gate allowing the Portuguese army to attack the
    state. The Malaccan army was unprepared for the surprise attack and the invasion.

    3. An instructional booklet describes how to use an automatic washing machine in


    detail. Firstly, dirty clothes and detergent are added to the drum of the machine and
    fill the drum with water at the required temperature. Choose necessary program
    ranging from delicate wash, hand wash or quick wash, then just press the start
    button. With all types of machine, once the spin cycle is finished, you should remove
    the clothes as soon as possible and hang them up to dry.

    4. A medical report describing the effects of excessive caffeine intake to your body
    which includes the increasing of heartbeat when it acts as a stimulant on the central
    nervous system. After 15 minutes of ingesting, the drinker could experience the
    increasing heartbeat. Even though caffeine can help us to be alert, by consuming
    too much of it can also lead to jitters or restlessness. Caffeine can stimulate the
    adrenaline hormone which can send the body into jitters and tremors.

    5. A story written about a young girl who lost her parents in a car accident and being
    adopted by a wealthy family. At first, she struggled to fit into the family but after a
    few years of living together under one roof, she finally accepted the family like her
    own. Her personality changed completely from being a humble village girl to a
    snobbish and arrogant posh girl.
