Tutorial 1
Last Date of Submission: Jan 21, 2022

1. A coaxial line operates at 10 kHz. It has the following parameters: L = 0.5 µH/m, C =
20 pF/m, G = 0.5 S/m and R = 20 Ω/m.
(a) Calculate attenuation, phase and propagation constants, wavelength and character-
istic impedance.
(b) How long must be the line so that the receiver receives only 1% of the wave?
(c) If the wave travels a distance 10 m down the line, what phase shift does it occur?

2. A transmission line has Z0 = 65 + j5 Ω and γ = 1 + j10 m−1 . Is the line lossless? Find
the primary constants (R, L, G, C) of the line at 900 MHz. For these primary constants,
over what frequency range can the line be treated as a low loss line? (Assume α < 0.01β
for low loss).

3. The RG-11/U coaxial line has the following properties Z0 = 75 Ω and v = 23 c m/s.
Assuming the line to be lossless, calculate its inductance and capacitance per unit length.
(c is the velocity of light, 3 ×108 m/s)

4. A telephone line has R = 30 Ω/km, L = 100 mH/km, G = 0 and C = 20 µF/km. At f

= 1 kHz, obtain:
(a) The characteristic impedance of the line.
(b) The propagation constant.
(c) The phase velocity.

5. A lossy transmission line has R = 3.5 Ω/m, L = 2 µH/m, C = 120 pF/m and G = 0.
At 400 MHz, determine α, β, Z0 and v.

6. √
Show that in a distortionless transmission√line, the attentuation constant is equal to
RG and the phase constant is equal to ω LC.
