Speech: Global Warming.

For the past around 100 years, the normal temperature on earth has gone up by around a

degree Celsius or approximately 1.3 degrees Fahrenheit (Venkataramanan, 2011). The term

global warming has been described as the continuous rise in the normal and expected

temperatures of the earth. The continuous increase and rise in the temperatures here on earth

are what we refer to as global warming (Venkataramanan, 2011). The increase in these

temperatures causes the earth to get hotter, resulting in frequent adverse effects such as

drought, hurricanes, and floods. Some significant causes of global warming include

deforestation, burning of fossil fuels and emission of toxic gases into the ozone layer.

Deforestation, however, dramatically increases the severity of global warming. The ocean is

able to hold up to 50 times what the atmosphere holds with respect to carbon dioxide

(Venkataramanan, 2011). When the oceans are not able to hold such an amount of carbon

dioxide, it is then released into the atmosphere, and this results in global warming since the

atmosphere is unable to hold such a large amount. Carbon dioxide levels in the air are the

major cause for global warming and burning of fossils and the smoke from factories releases

carbon dioxide into the atmosphere (Venkataramanan, 2011). Therefore, by reducing the

amount of fossil fuel demand and reducing the number of factories in an area will help us

reduce the rate of global warming here on earth. Additionally, since plants help by taking in

the carbon dioxide and releasing better gases like oxygen, avoiding clearing out trees and

practicing afforestation would reduce the global warming rate on earth. It is our

responsibility, you and I, to ensure that we take care of our environment by ensuring what we

release to it is not toxic.

My speech effectively grabs the audience’s attention because one, it is direct and to the

point, it is brief, and also it contains factual information that is interesting to the audience to

discover. Additionally, it starts with a statement that makes the reader or the audience curious

and wants to know more about what the speaker is talking about.
