Training Paths
ACDelco currently has more than 700 courses available in its
technical training portfolio. The courses on the training paths
mirror ASE categories and represent the latest automotive
technologies. In order to capture changes in automotive
systems and repairs as they happen, the training paths will be
periodically updated. There are currently training paths in:

through the Training Progress Status Report on the site’s home
page. If you do not remember your user ID or password, call
1-800-825-5886 and select Prompt 1.
The status report provides a clear, personalized visual overview
of an individual technician’s status toward completing each of
the assigned training paths. Click the report for a detailed list
of courses, including courses completed and those yet to be
completed. Your progress is shown in the percentage complete
column. Once 100 percent is reached, a medallion will appear.

The paths are organized with four competency levels. Core

and Advantage levels provide basic information and all courses
must be completed. Professional and Specialist levels contain
an elective portion in which participants can choose which
courses to complete. This allows some versatility in the specific
courses technicians choose to complete as a part of their
training path.

Specialists Awards
Upon completing a path, technicians are personally awarded
with a custom-designed “Specialist” medallion by an ACDelco
representative as well as a plaque to display all medallions
earned.
Award recipients also receive a printed certificate summarizing
the course paths they’ve completed and a letter of completion
acknowledging their “Specialist” status.
Update Your Profile
Eligible participants also are encouraged to update their profile
preferences to receive email notifications, which enables them
to receive system-generated messages that provide regular
progress updates on their training status. Click Edit Profile and
then select Yes for Agree to Terms and Conditions. Be sure the
email address and name are correct in the profile.

In addition, service center managers will receive an equivalent
plaque adorned with medallions to display in the front shop.
This plaque is designed to display the medallions that any
technician working at that shop may receive.
How to Participate
All ACDelco Professional Service Center program participants,
Regional Service Centers, and Key Fleets are eligible to
participate in the training program. Log in to the ACDelco

designed to inspire technicians to enroll in the latest world-

Video Series Highlights Family Shop’s Growing Legacy
From large trucks to lawn tractors, the father-son team of
Joe and Augustine (Augie) Altamore, owners of Altamore’s
Automotive Services in Belvidere, Ill., can put it back into
service. And if customers leave feeling like they’re part of an
extended family, well, that’s the idea.
Joe Altamore’s parents, who emigrated from Sicily in 1968,
purchased a restaurant and made sure everyone who dined
there felt special. Joe and Augie are continuing that legacy.
“My grandfather would always talk to the customers, and we
do that here with our customers,” says Augie Altamore. “We
want people to trust us and they should, because we do honest
work.”
The Altamores are the fourth auto service professionals
featured in “The Part That Built Me,” a video series developed
by ACDelco to honor technicians and encourage young people
to pursue careers as automotive technicians. (Watch at

Located about an hour northwest of Chicago, Altamore’s
Automotive Service is a full-service repair facility that handles

Three generations of Altamores have worked on cars – and it
looks as though another generation is being groomed for the
garage.
“As I grew up working on cars with my father as a young kid, we
would go to the local parts store. It always had to be ACDelco.
We were buying cars and restoring them. And I started doing
that with my son. And now I’m starting to do what with my
grandson,” Joe Altamore says.
“I still love to work, but someday, when I can’t do it anymore, I
would love to hand it over to Augie and maybe someday have
my grandson take over. And it goes on from there – a family-
owned business.”
A strong advocate for ACDelco training, Swanson has
completed 34 ACDelco training courses, including ILTs, Tech
Assists and Seminars.

Automatic Parking Assist Hits The Spot

The Automatic Parking Assist system available on 2014-2015

Chevrolet SS, Cadillac CTS Sedan and Cadillac XTS searches
for and steers the vehicle into parallel and perpendicular
parking spots, making parking easy for drivers. Ultrasonic
sensors detect the width and depth of either parallel or
perpendicular (reverse right-angle) parking spaces. The system
provides hands-free steering, but the driver must still shift
gears and control the brakes and accelerator.
Parking the Vehicle
The Automatic Parking Assist system operates when the
vehicle speed is less than 18 mph (30 km/h).
The system defaults to searching for parking spaces to the right
of the vehicle, but it can also search for parking spaces to the
left by turning on the left turn signal.
After completely passing a large enough space bordered by
two vehicles or other objects, the system provides instructions
on the DIC to shift to Reverse to engage automatic steering.

On models equipped with Spark sensor reading, which should always

the exhaust when starting, there
are several basics tests to perform
during diagnosis.
First, verify fuel quality. Next,
perform a compression test. On V6
engines, there should be 150–185
psi average compression. No cylinder
should be less than 140 psi. On
4-cylinder engines, there should be
170–200 psi average compression.
No cylinder should read less than
100 psi. Also install a vacuum gauge
prior to a cold start and watch the
needle for signs of a sticking valve.
In addition, perform a fuel system
check. The following tests should be
done after an overnight cold soak.
Set up the vehicle with the CH-
48027 Digital Pressure Gauge or
equivalent and J-37287 Fuel Line
with Shut-Off Valve or equivalent.
Run the engine to purge all air from
the fuel system and then shut off the
engine and let it sit overnight. Unplug
the injector harness connector.
The next morning, turn the key on
but do not start the engine. Use the
CH-48027 Digital Pressure Gauge or
equivalent to verify prime pulse fuel
pressure is between 55–60 psi.
Use the Tech 2 or GDS 2 set in
PSI, confirm the fuel rail pressure
be close to what the Digital Fuel
Pressure Gauge reads for low side
pressure during this test. This will
also confirm if there is an off-set with
the fuel rail pressure sensor.
Next, crank the engine to see if
it fires. With the injector harness
connectors unplugged, the injectors
are electrically disabled so no fuel
should be delivered to the engine.
If the engine fires, one or more
injectors have been leaking and have
introduced fuel into one or more
cylinders.
Reconnect the injector harness
connectors, start the engine, let it
run for 10 minutes, and then shut
down the engine. Close the shut-off
valve in the J-37287 Fuel Line or
equivalent, which will now separate
the engine side of the fuel system
from the rear section of the return-
less fuel system.
Using the Digital Pressure Gauge,
look for a drop in the high side of
the fuel system by monitoring low
side pressure. With the J-37287 or
equivalent valve closed, the system
should hold at least 60 psi for a few
hours. If there is a rapid decrease
in fuel pressure, this would indicate
a leaking high pressure fuel pump
or leaking injectors since the fuel
pressure cannot bleed off to the tank
as the fuel line shut-off valve
is closed.

New Direct Injection Training Course
Takes Pressure Off Fuel System Diagnosis
The piezo fuel injector found in a spray-guided direct fuel
injection system typically uses a voltage of around 140 volts
to expand the piezo stack, which actuates the injector’s pintle
valve and allows the fuel to precisely and evenly flow from
the injector. When a piezo injector is replaced, an injector
adjustment procedure must be performed that allows the
control module to learn the spray characteristics of the new
injector.

Direct injection fuel systems recently have been adopted by all
manufacturers. By injecting fuel directly into the combustion
chamber at a high pressure instead of injecting into the intake
manifold, direct injection can decrease emissions (better
atomization of the fuel), use less fuel (to produce equivalent
horsepower) and provide better performance (reducing pre-
ignition and detonation). These benefits mean more vehicles
with direct injection will be on the road.
The training course presents an in-depth look at each aspect of
the direct injection system. Gasoline direct injection systems
are divided into the supply side and the high pressure side while

are divided into a

case studies that demonstrate proper direct fuel injection
diagnosis of several components. The case study format
provides participants with real-world vehicle conditions that
are consistent with repairs that would be found in the service
bay. They include a descriptive event with the information
needed to find the root cause and determine the most effective
correction.
Fuel return lines
One example on a 6.6L Duramax Turbo Diesel engine
illustrates how a fuel concern in one section of the system
can affect the operation of the entire system and shows
the importance of performing all the steps in a diagnostic
procedure. The vehicle in the case study ran rough and lacked
power and there was low fuel pressure in all operating ranges.
First, the high pressure fuel pump was replaced, but the lack of
power was still present. The diagnostic information advises to
check for a restriction in the supply lines or a restricted filter.
Replacing the fuel filter repaired the performance conditions.
In the course, all of the related documents for the case studies
are provided to give participants a better understanding of
the diagnosis as well as specific information that may apply to
certain components, systems or manufacturers.

Chevrolet Introduces All-New 2016 Camaro

The sixth-generation, 2016 Chevrolet Camaro offers higher
levels of performance, technology and refinement and is
designed to maintain the sporty car segment leadership earned
over the past five years.
Its faster, more nimble driving experience is enabled by an
all-new, lighter architecture and a broader powertrain range.
In fact, vehicle mass has been reduced by 200 pounds or more,
depending on the model. Six all-new powertrain combinations
are offered, including a 2.0L Turbo, an all-new 3.6L V-6 and the
LT1 6.2L V-8, which is SAE-certified at 455 horsepower (339
kW) and 455 lb-ft of torque (617 Nm) — for the most powerful
Camaro SS ever. Each engine is available with six-speed manual
transmissions or new eight-speed automatic transmissions.
Camaro’s leaner, stiffer platform and slightly smaller
dimensions are accentuated by a dramatic, sculpted exterior.
Meticulously tuned in the wind tunnel, the exterior contributes
to performance through reduced aerodynamic lift for better
handling while enhancing efficiency. Inside, a driver-focused
interior integrates class-leading control technologies, including
a new Driver Mode Selector, configurable instrument cluster
and a customizable ambient lighting feature.
Only two parts carry over from the fifth-generation Camaro
to the new Gen Six: the rear bowtie emblem and the SS badge.
The 2016 Camaro goes on sale later this year – with an all-new
convertible model, too.

The Very First Camaro

During the introduction of the 2016 Camaro, Chevrolet
displayed a number of historic models, including the very first
Camaro to roll off the assembly line. Carrying VIN #100001,
this 1967 Camaro is documented as the first of 49 hand-built
“pilot assembly” vehicles built at the Norwood, Ohio, plant in
mid-1966 — early models built for evaluation before regular
production commenced. It was fitted with a 3.7L inline-six
engine and a three-speed manual transmission. It was the car
Chevrolet used for the public introduction of the Camaro in
August 1966, shortly before the car went on sale. It was also
used in a number of public relations photos and promotional
films. It eventually went to an Oklahoma Chevrolet dealer
and passed through several owners before being turned into
1967 Camaro VIN #001 shown at the 2016 Camaro introduction.
a drag racer in the 1980s. It was purchased by Cory Lawson
around 2009 and he oversaw its restoration to production-
line condition, with documentation assistance from the GM
Heritage Collection.
