Evidence for the Big Bang Theory

The Doppler Effect

One of the best known pieces of evidence that the Universe is expanding is the Doppler Effect.  Go to this
website (Links to an external site.) and read the first three pages.
Now construct an explanation to someone else (the person next to you, your parents, me) what the Doppler
effect has to do with the Big Bang Theory. You could do this by recording yourself on video or in an email.
Cosmic Background Radiation
Another piece of evidence for the Big Bang Theory is the background radiation detected accidentally
by Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson in 1965.
1. Go to this site (Links to an external site.) and read the information. Then answer the following questions:
(a) What is the Cosmic Background Radiation?
(b) Where did it come from?
(c) What has it got to do with the Big Bang Theory?
(d) How reliable do you think the information is in this article? Justify your answer.

2. Go to this site (Links to an external site.) and read the information. Then answer the following:
(a) How does the reliability of this site compare with the previous one? Justify your answer.
(b) The information is divided up into subheadings. Summarise the main idea in each section by writing one
or two sentences to describe the main point being made.
(c) Click on “Beyond the Big Bang” in the left hand column. What are the two main problems with the Big
Bang Theory?  How have Scientists attempted to solve these problems
(d) Spend a bit of time looking at the site. Record anything that catches your interest for later discussion.
