suggesting an acceptable and intelligible model of Indian pro
nounciation, the British Received Pronounciation is given. As
the BRP may be unattainable by a large majority of Indians and
is in many ways unsuitable, the authors feel that an Indian
model will help ensure intelligibility.

This is an elementary but detailed textbook of English pho


netics with enough information about general phonetics which
will make the reader's task of understanding English phonetics
easy. Plenty of examples are drawn from Indian languages,

particularly Tamil and


Hindi, to illustrate the points made.
There are number of diagrams to facilitate the readear's compre
hension of the subject. Most chapters end with exercises, the key
to which is provided at the end of the book. It has a lot of
passages both in orthography and in phonetics transcription.
The book covers the phonetics syllabus of most Indian Univer
sities in which phonetics is offered both as an undergraduate and
postgraduate subject.
