Assignment #1 Chapter 1. Integer and Rational Exponent

Solve the Assignment given on PAGE 9 OF THE MODULE.

1. Place the appropriate symbol < or > between each of the following pairs of numbers:

(a) -1 > -6

(b) 5 < -29

(c) -14 > 7

2. Find the value of each of the following:

(a) 16 – 12 x 4 + 8 ÷ 2

= 16 – 56 ÷ 2

= -40 ÷ 2

= -20

(b) (16 – 12) x (4 + 8) ÷ 2

= 4 x 12 ÷ 2

= 48 ÷ 2

= 24

(c) 9 – 3 (17 + 5[5 – 7])

= 9 – 3 (17 + 5 x 2)

= 9 – 3 (44)

= 6 (44)

=264

(d) 8(3[2 + 4] – 2[5 – 7])

= 8 (3 x 6 – 2 x 2)

= 8 (32)

= 256
2. Place the appropriate symbols of the following items;

a) -9 < -6 (f) 5 > 2

(b) -5 > -8 (g) 4 < 6

(c) -3 > -7 (h) 9 < 12

(d) -8 > -12 (i) 10 > 8

(e) -4 < -2 (j) 7 < 11

3. Find the Value of the following items

(a) 10 + (-5) = 10 – 5 = 5 (f) 6 + (-2) = 6 – 2 = 4

(b) 19 - (-8) = 19 + 8 = 27 (g) -8 + (-3) = -8 – 3 = -11

(c) 17 +(-10) = 17 – 10 = 7 (h) 14 + (-4) = 14 – 4 = 10

(d) -20 - (-5) = -20 + 5 = -15 (i) 16 - (-3) = 16 + 3 = 19

(e) 11 + (-3) = 11 – 3 = 8 (j) 18 - (-5) = 18 + 5 = 23

3. Find the value of the following item;

(a) (-60) x 4 = -24 (f) 14/ (-4) = -3.5

(b) (-20) x (-8) = 160 (g) 12/ (-3) = -4

(c) (-12) x (-14) = 168 (h) 60/ 6 = 10

(d) (-16) x 20 = -320 (i) 36/ (-8) = -4.5

(e) (-30) x (-16) = 480 (j) 40/ 5 = 8
