Rizal really retracted letter, one of the main
reasons is to save his family from executions and at the same time to marry Josephine Bracken. It stated “I declare myself a Catholic and in this religion in which I was born and educated I wish to live and die. I retract with all my heart whatever in my words, writings, publications and conduct has been contrary to my character as son of the Catholic Church.” According to De Viana, it is not possible that the retraction letter had been forged because witnesses are present while Rizal was signing it. Roman Catholic defenders also claimed that it is true and the handwriting experts concluded a long time ago that it is genuine. The exact copy of Rizal’s retracted letter had been received by Fr. Balaguer in the evening immediately preceding Rizal's execution.
