Drilling and blasting are the only ways to extract rock, which is a continuous mass of solid mineral

content such as granite or limestone. Rock is never fully monolithic; instead, it is divided into irregular
blocks by a system of joints (cracks) that differ in quantity and extent. Despite these joints, rock is
generally the strongest and most stable material on which a building can be founded.
