REPORT

What is a report?
Formal piece of writing written for a superior (e.g. a
teacher, boss, college principal) or a peer group (e.g.
members of an English club).
Candidates are expected to
● give some factual information
● make suggestions or recommendations.
What does it mean formal?

● avoid abbreviation and contractions


● do not use idioms, phrasal verbs, colloquial language
● Impersonal style
● use passive voice
● use long sentences, but make them readable and understandable
● use appropriate linking devices
LAYOUT

● Introduction:
-a short section gives the reason for writing – 1 or 2 s
● Main body with appropriate section headings 2-3 p
-developing the ideas,arguments
● Recommanda: the main points are summarised.
- it may include a reference to future action.
GRAMMAR

❖ Passive voice – it was suggested/the facts were presented


❖ Reported speech – Most people stated/expressed/claimed/
❖ Adjectives- potential/crucial/vital/forthcoming/expected/imminent
❖ Hypothetical constructions – this would mean that/this should/ it
would seem
❖ Adverbs – increasingly, overwhelmingly, understandably, alarmingly
❖ Linking devices
