Understanding the Self Mr. McJoseph Pagalan

Module 8

Learning Tasks

1. Make F-I-L-I-P-I-N-O as an acronym and give a word for each letter that
describes you as being a Filipino.

2. Discuss how being a Filipino affects your “self”. How can becoming a better
Filipino influence your duty to becoming a better version of yourself?

Being a Filipino has a positive impact on me. I'm glad to declare that we have
some of the most admirable characteristics that anyone can see. Despite being
colonized by several countries, we were able to fight for our independence and maintain
our essential principles and culture. We have a good mindset about which I must say I
am proud. There are some qualities that we inherit from our ancestors.
a. Hospitable. We treat our visitors with respect and extend a warm welcome to
them in our house. As a token of our warm welcome, we serve them delectable Filipino
cuisine.
b. Respectful. We hold everyone in high regard, particularly the elderly. When
speaking to an older person, we use the phrases "Po," "Opo," which imply "yes." Putting
the hand of the elderly, particularly our grandparents and grandfathers, was just a
symbol of respect for them.
c. Strong family bonds and religious observances. We used to go to church and
pray with the entire family, and after church, we would spend our free time going to
parks and bonding.
d. Generosity and helpfulness. We tend to share what we have and to help those
in need, particularly those who have been affected by natural disasters such as
typhoons, earthquakes, and other natural disasters, by simply donating our unused
clothes, food packs, and other items that we believe will be of assistance to them.
e. We tend to work long hours to meet our family's necessities, if not the entire
day.
f. The best attributes that we have as Filipinos, in my opinion, are loving and
compassion. We used to express our affection for and concern for our parents. Our
behaviors, too, demonstrate our love and concern for them. Respecting them and caring
for each family member illustrates how much we care for and value each of them.

Becoming a better Filipino has influenced my obligation to improve myself and

build a feeling of optimism. I must attempt to be a positive role model for my fellow
Filipinos and urge them to avoid undesirable tendencies common among Filipinos, such
as the concept of "what goes around, comes around" and the "crab mentality." I need to
persuade them that success in life comes from hard work and believing that we can
achieve more rather than waiting for what will happen next. It all comes down to how
you choose and act on the options you have in life. Our mindset as a person should not
be influenced by crab mentality. Other people's accomplishments should make us joyful.
We must learn to applaud the victories of others because our time will come soon if we
believe in ourselves that we are working hard to obtain that victory.
