Jerusalem. There was a special feast there called the Feast of the Passover.
When it was time to go home, instead of leaving with His parents, Jesus stayed
behind in Jerusalem.

Jesus’ parents began their journey back
home thinking that Jesus was travelling
with some of His friends. It was the
next day before they realised that Jesus
was missing. When they discovered that

had seen Him, but nobody knew where
He was. Mary and Joseph went back to
Jerusalem to look for Him. Three days
later they found Him in the Temple.

Jesus was sitting in the middle of a group of religious people in the Temple, listening to them

Mary had been so worried about losing Jesus that she said to Him “Why did You do this? Did

The Lord Jesus was talking about His Father in Heaven but Mary and Joseph did not
understand what He was saying.

After this the Lord Jesus went back home to Nazareth with Mary and Joseph. In Nazareth,
Jesus continued to grow and was always obedient to His parents. As well as being obedient to
His parents on earth, Jesus was always obedient to God, His Father in Heaven.

When Jesus was grown up He met with His cousin.

Many people followed Jesus’ cousin, John, to hear what he had to say. John preached
to all the people who were in the area around the River Jordan. John told the people
that they needed to repent of all the bad things they had done and to have their sins
forgiven. If the people were truly sorry for what they had done, John baptised them
in the river, as a sign that they wanted to change their lives. John was trying to
prepare the people for the time when Jesus would come.

One day, when John was

As John was baptising Jesus the heavens opened. A shape like a dove came down on Jesus’
shoulders and there was a loud voice from Heaven. The voice said “You are My beloved Son; in
You I am well pleased.”

Have you ever wanted to do


something wrong? Maybe you have
wanted to take something that
wasn’t yours or maybe you have
wanted to tell somebody a lie.
When we get the feeling we want
to do something wrong, this is
called being tempted. Jesus knew
what it was like to be tempted,
though He never did anything
wrong.

He went into the desert. He spent
forty days there and during this
time He was tempted by the devil.

Jesus was very hungry because He hadn’t eaten anything the whole time He was in

Next, the devil tempted the Lord Jesus to worship Him. He showed Jesus all the
places in the world and told Jesus that if He wanted to be the ruler of them all, then
He must worship him.
The devil tempted Jesus a third time. He brought Him to the top of the Temple in Jerusalem.
The devil told Jesus that if He really was the Son of God then He could let Himself fall from
the top of the Temple and angels would protect Him.

Jesus was tempted by the devil many times, but He never did what the devil wanted Him to.
Instead He used words from the Bible to show that He was going to obey God, His Father in
Heaven.

After Jesus was baptised, many people heard about Him. He was beginning to become
well known. After Jesus had spent some time teaching in the synagogues in Galilee,
He returned to Nazareth, the town where He had grown up.

On a special day, the Sabbath, Jesus went into the synagogue (a building like a
church). He stood up to read and was handed the book of Isaiah, which is part of the
Bible.
