Answer the following questions.

WEEK 1 – Materials under load

1. Explain the effects of loading on a material under load.

- The field of strength of materials deals with forces and deformations that result from their acting on a
material. A load applied to a mechanical member will induce internal forces within the member called
stresses when those forces are expressed on a unit basis.

WEEK 2 – Limitations of materials under load

1. Define the following terms:

 Proportional limit - The proportional limit is the maximum stress that a dental material sustains
without any deviation, or the magnitude of elastic stress above which plastic deformation occurs.
So, the proportional limit is defined as the highest stress at which the stress-strain curve is a
straight line.
 Elastic limit - Elastic limit, maximum stress or force per unit area within a solid material that can
arise before the onset of permanent deformation. Stresses beyond the elastic limit cause a material
to yield or flow. For such materials the elastic limit marks the end of elastic behavior and the
beginning of plastic behavior.
 Yield point - yield point, in mechanical engineering, load at which a solid material that is being
stretched begins to flow, or change shape permanently, divided by its original cross-sectional area;
or the amount of stress in a solid at the onset of permanent deformation. The yield point,
alternatively called the elastic limit, marks the end of elastic behavior and the beginning of plastic
behavior. When stresses less than the yield point are removed, the material returns to its original
shape
 Ultimate strength - The ultimate strength of a material in tension, compression, or shear,
respectively, is the maximum tensile, compressive, or shear stress that the material can sustain,
calculated on the basis of the ultimate load and the original or unstrained dimensions. It is implied
that the condition of stress represents uniaxial tension, uniaxial compression, or pure shear, as the
case may be.
 Breaking strength - Breaking strength is the ability of a material to withstand a pulling or tensile
force. It is customarily measured in units of force per cross-sectional area. This is an important
concept in engineering, especially in the fields of material science, mechanical engineering and
structural engineering.
