CCDM

Brief description
The check / cash deposit module (or CCDM) is designed to be integrated in
automated teller machines and full-function self-service terminals. It enables
cash deposit and automated check handling.
Checks and banknotes are referred to as documents below. It is possible to
input a single document or a bundle of documents. A bundle may contain
either just checks or just banknotes, and can consist of up to 50 documents.
The bundle is input short side first.

Banknotes and checks deposited by the customer are stored in cassettes.

Which type of document is stored in which cassette is defined on the basis of
the bank's application.
Its modular design enables its use in different basic devices; it can be
deployed in both frontload and rearload basic devices.

To ensure trouble-free processing, a metal detection unit in the vicinity of the

input / output slot checks the bundle the customer inputs for metal objects (e.g.
paper clips) and rejects it immediately if it finds any. After the separation
process, a general check is also made for foreign objects to prevent
documents with tape, for example, or folded or bent documents from hindering
the handling process.
Inappropriate documents are removed from the handling process and returned
to the customer (for example checks with unidentified code line) or transported
to the retract cassette and retained (counterfeit notes and documents
suspected of being counterfeit, for example). The retract cassette is also used
to store any documents that the customer has forgotten or not removed.
The entire handling process inside the CCDM is monitored with the help of
sensors.
Status and error codes are displayed on a control panel to indicate the status
of the CCDM (particularly in the case of a fault). The status messages help to
locate and take care of the source of a fault (see "Faults").

Brief description CCDM

The input/output area is protected by a shutter built into the basic device. The
application program installed on the basic device enables the use of optical
indicators on the customer panel for user guidance.

Structure
The various basic devices and configuration options result in two variants of
the CCDM, which are described in the sections "Variant 1" and "Variant 2".
In variant 1 both the CCDM cassette module and the CCDM head module are
located in the safe.
In variant 2 the CCDM cassette module is located in the safe and the CCDM
head module in the upper part of the basic device. The transition from the
CCDM head module to the CCDM cassette module is implemented by means
of a transfer transport.
The two variants can be used both in basic frontloaders and rearloaders.
In addition to the standard cassette version there is also a long version. As
long as no explicit distinction is made between the 'cassette' and the 'cassette
(long version)' the description in this document applies to both versions.

How the CCDM works CCDM

How the CCDM works

Since the CCDM can handle both checks and banknotes, it must be told via a
user entry (dependent on the application) if checks or banknotes are to be
processed before the bundle is deposited.

Check processing

It is possible to input a single check. When there are several checks, a bundle
has to be input. A bundle may consist of up to 50 checks.
The checks that are input in the input / output area are drawn in as a bundle.
The bundle is first aligned in the bundle alignment station and then separated.
The individual checks are then aligned again in the alignment station. This
ensures that the code line (magnetic characters CMC7 or E13B) on the check
can then be read magnetically.
During transport through the check / banknote reader, the front and rear of the
check are scanned with two different illuminations (red and green) at a
resolution of 200 dpi. These scanned checks can be stored together with the
information from the code line (magnetic characters) and additional transaction
data on the basic device (system unit (PC)).
If the code line is not recognized (because it is not present, or because the
check was entered backwards), the check is redirected to the 'reject transport
with collecting compartment' and returned to the customer with an appropriate
message.
Once the front and rear have been scanned, the checks are stored temporarily
on a drum module.
The matrix printer station makes it possible to cancel the checks by printing a
line of information on the back of the checks.
Only after the customer confirms the transaction are the checks stored in the
cassette. If the transaction is canceled, all checks are returned to the
customer.
Checks suspected of being counterfeit and those which have not been
removed are deposited in the retract cassette.

8 CCDM - Operating Manual 01750135975 B

CCDM How the CCDM works

Banknote processing

As with checks, it is possible to deposit single banknotes. When there are

several banknotes they are input as a bundle. A bundle may consist of up to
50 banknotes.
The deposited banknotes are drawn in as a bundle and separated. The
verification of the banknotes takes place in the banknote or check / banknote
reader.
Using loadable, country-specific currency data as a reference, the authenticity
of the banknotes is checked here. Following the check, counterfeit or
suspicious banknotes are stored in the separate retract cassette.
Since those banknotes that are determined to be genuine are then stored
temporarily in the escrow unit, it is possible to return the entire bundle if the
deposit transaction is aborted.
If the customer confirms the transaction, the banknotes are stored in a
cassette provided for that purpose.

i Trouble-free banknote processing is only achieved in a check/cash-in

configuration (configuration3 ) if there is also a ribbon cartridge in the
printing station during cash-in operations.

Basic operation CCDM

Basic operation
The following description refers to the CCDM rearload version. If any part of
the description refers to the CCDM frontload version, a reference is made to
this effect in the relevant sections.
For the sake of clarity, the illustrations show only those components in detail
that are of relevance for the description in that section. Other components are
shown in simplified form.
All components of the CCDM, including those inside the safe, are easily
accessible. The unit's construction makes it relatively simple to take care of
any problems that might arise e.g. in the case of a jam along a transport path
(see section "Faults").
This section describes basic tasks necessary in the operation of the CCDM:
 Emptying the cassettes in the CCDM cassette module
 Replacing the ribbon cartridge in the printing station
 Opening and closing the individual functional elements, which may
sometimes have to be opened when clearing a fault;
Opening the basic device and pulling out the CCDM head module or CCDM
cassette module is described in the operating manual for the basic device.

i A specially mounted safety switch deactivates all the CCDM drives as

soon as the CCDM is pulled out of the basic device. This ensures that
no turning parts are touched while carrying out the steps described
below.

12 CCDM - Operating Manual 01750135975 B

CCDM Basic operation

Depositing documents
Before documents can be deposited, the CCDM has to be told what kind of
documents (checks or banknotes) it should expect for processing.
It is possible to input a check or a banknote. If several checks or banknotes
are to be deposited, they must be deposited in bundles. A bundle may consist
of up to 50 checks or banknotes.
Please note the following when depositing a single document or a bundle:
 When depositing a check or a bundle of checks, be sure that the magnetic
characters on the checks are oriented to the upper right.
 The banknotes in a bundle do not need to be in any particular order.
To avoid any problems, the following rules should be followed before
i depositing any documents:
– Before they are deposited, bundles must be free of any foreign
objects, such as paperclips, staples, pins, etc.
– Badly damaged, torn or taped documents must be sorted out.
– Folds and bends in the documents must be removed.

The documents must be laid in the middle of the input / output area with the
short side forward.

i If by accident a bundle should contain an unsuitable document, that

document will be removed from the further handling process.
Depending on document classification, this document is either stored
temporarily in the reject transport with a collecting compartment and
then returned to the customer, or it is transported to the retract
cassette and retained there (for example counterfeit money).

01750135975 B CCDM - Operating Manual 13

Basic operation CCDM

Quality guidelines for deposited banknotes

To ensure optimal availability of the device and to prevent banknote jams in
the input area, make sure that the banknotes to be deposited are of a certain
quality.
The device allows slightly damaged banknotes to be processed. However, if
the notes exceed the defined limits, the device will not be able to process the
notes correctly. A corresponding status message is generated and the
transaction is interrupted until the problem has been eliminated by the
operator.
To avoid such situations the following precautions should be followed (see the
following illustration):
 Flatten dog's ears that are 1 cm or larger.
 Sort out strongly creased, very old and heavily damaged banknotes.
 Remove banknotes that are folded round other notes (e.g. to form packs of
10 notes) and place them correctly in the note bundle.
 Align the banknotes in the bundle.
 Strongly crimped or folded notes must be smoothed out.
 'Deformed' bundles must be inserted with the concave side upwards.
 If banknotes are crumpled, compensate straight or curved crumpling by
'rolling' the banknote bundle.
 Any banknotes with a central fold must be removed.
It is not necessary to check every banknote in a bundle.
i
Only sort out those banknotes which are obviously not intact.
