Weekly Description of Topics Covered

Week 1 Single component phase equilibrium, Gibbs phase rule.
Vapour pressure estimation (Cox Charts, Antoine’s equation, Clausius-
Clapeyron equation, linear interpolation using known values)
Week 2 Gas-liquid systems, Raoult and Dalton’s Laws, dew point and bubble
point pressure and temperature calculations.
Week 3 One condensable component, humidity/saturation terms.
SAFETY - Lower and upper flammability limits, flash point temperature
calculations.
Week 4 Multi-component gas-liquid systems, Txy & Pxy diagrams, flash
distillation using mass balances and the Lever Rule.
Week 5 Solutions of solids in liquids and hydration, Txy diagrams, crystallization
using mass balances and the Lever Rule.
Week 6 Immiscible and partially miscible liquids, ternary diagrams, extraction
using the Lever Rule.
Midterm exam review.
Week 7 MIDTERM WEEK (new in 2011; a 1-hour make-up lecture has been
added to every second week throughout the term)
Week 8 Forms of energy (kinetic, potential, internal, work, heat), path and state
variables
Energy balances on closed systems
Week 9 Enthalpy
Energy balances on open systems at steady state
Week 10 Mechanical energy balances, Bernoulli’s equation
Using Steam Tables, estimating Latent Heats (Trouton’s rule, Chen’s
equation, Clausius-Clapeyron equation, Watson’s correlation)
Week 11 Energy balances on non reactive systems, phase change(s), heats of
mixing and solutions.
Week 12 Energy Balances on reactive systems: heat of formation, heat of
combustion, Hess’s Law.
Final exam review.

Examination type:
Midterm: Cheat sheet + data tables
Final: Open text

Marking Scheme:
Assignments: 10%
Quizzes: 10%
Labs: 20%
Midterm exam: 20%
Final exam: 40%
Special marking
• You must earn a passing mark (50% or greater) on the weighted
rule:
combination of the Midterm and the Final Exams for the Assignment,
Tutorial, and Lab marks to be included in the calculation of your course
mark. If the weighted combination of the Midterm and Final Exams is
less than 50%, the mark assigned for the course will be the combination
of your Midterm and Final exam marks.
• You must earn a passing mark (50% or greater) on at least 8 of 10
Tutorials, on at least 8 of 10 Assignments, and on all 4 Labs. If this
requirement is not met, a mark of “INCOMPLETE” will be assigned for
this course.

Comments:
In the Winter term, CECS and WatPD need 3 lectures to meet with the class to review co-op and
work term procedures. The addition of a timeslot in the Winter 1B schedule for “class meetings”
would free up the schedule so that 3 lectures are not taken from ChE101.
