CHAPTER 14
Technical Descriptions and Process Analyses

Define Technical Descriptions

 A Technical Description is a party-by-party depiction of the components of a mechanism tool, or
piece of equipment. Technical descriptions are important features in several types of technical
communication.

Types of Technical Descriptions

 Operations Manuals: it usually comes in the package of the mechanism, that helps the user
construct, install, operate, and service the equipment.
 Product Demand Specifications: if there is a piece of equipment that does not exist, you
must write a product demand specifying its exact needs.

Definition of Process Analysis

 A process analysis is comparable to an instruction. Instructions provide a step-by-step
explanation of how to do something.

Overall Organization
 In the introduction, specify and define your topic and explain the topics functions, capabilities,
or processes. You can also include a list of components, parts, or equipment.
 Word usage: your word usage in technical description and process analysis depends on your
purpose. When you use photographic words, they are denotative, quantifiable, and specific.
When you use Impressionistic words, they are vague and connotative.

The Writing Process at Work

 Prewriting: first gather data using brainstorming/listing, giving details of what you are
writing about.
 Writing: focusing on overall organization, highlighting, and details.
 Rewriting: incorporate these suggestions into a finished copy.
