Hello! My name's Katara Nuihinii. I'm 21 years old
and I'm a student at The University of Sydney. I live in Sydney, but I'm not Australian; I'm from Wellington, in New Zealand
I speak English and Māori, and I can use NZSL (New
Zealand Sign Language) too. English is my first language and Māori is my mother tongue. I learned nzsl when I was a child because my older sister can't hear. In New Zealand, there are three official languages and nzsl is one of them. Did you know that about 20,250 people use New Zealand Sign Language? The other two official languages are English and Māori. Over 96% of people in the country speak English as a first language, and about 4% of the population speak Māori. Māori wasn't an official language in New Zealand in the past, but now it's very popular all over the country. In my hometown, there are Māori language immersion courses and schools, and there are two television channels that broadcast in Māori.
There aren't many holidays in New Zealand, but in
my town we celebrate Wellington Anniversary Day in January. On this day, there are public events and celebrations in town, and people participate in fun activities like the Birdman Competition at Taranaki Street Wharf. During this celebration, people dress up as birds and take turns in flying from one place to another. It's really funny! Tell me about you. Where are you from? What languages do you speak? What's your favorite holiday?
