1980 sonrası Türkiye sanatında “Yeni Dışavurumculuk”un
Bedri Baykam yaygınlaşmasında öncülük görevi üstlenmiş bir sanatçıdır. 1980-83 arasında Oakland California Uygulamalı Sanatlar 1957 Yüksekokulu’nda sanat eğitimini tamamlar. Kişisel hikayeleri ile çağdaş üretim pratiğini, bazen şiirsel dışavurumcu bir ifadeyle Kendi İçinde Bir Dünya bazen de en basit nesneleri kolajladığı düzenlemeleriyle öne A World Within Itself çıkaran sanatçı, soyuttan figüratife, yerleştirmeden gösteri 1998 sanatlarına uzanan farklı anlatım tekniklerini kullanmaktadır. 1980 sonrası apolitize olmuş sanat ortamında politik ve 151 x 266 cm toplumsala yönelik mesajlar içeren resim ve eylemler Tuval üzerine karışık teknik gerçekleştirir. “Demokrasi Kutusu” (1987), “Kubilay’ın Odası” Mixed media on canvas (1987) “The Kitapyakar” (1988) adlı düzenlemelerinde sanatçı DR. UZUN SÜRELİ ÖDÜNÇ LONG TERM LOAN 1986’dan başlayarak fotoğraf ile resmi buluşturduğu Photo- Painting’ler gerçekleştirir. Geniş ve titiz bir belge çalışmasının sonucu olarak bu resimler “İç Manzaralar II” (1988), “27 Mayıs” (1990) ve “Kuvay-ı Milliye” (1994) sergilerinde yer alır. Son dönem resimlerinde biriktirdiği imge ve yöntemlerin bir tür sentezine girişir: Akıtma resimlerinin üzerine transfer ettiği ve sonsuzluk hissi veren gökyüzü ve okyanus görünümleri, 4 boyutlu kolaj çalışmaları, her dönem kullandığı kısa ve etkili sloganlar, çocukluk resimlerinin çizgisel karakterleri, yeni endüstriyel atık malzemelerden oluşturduğu kolajlar, fotoğrafladığı kadınlar yan yana getirdiği imgelerdir. Sanatçı, 1984’de San Francisco Modern Sanat Müzesi’nde, Batı’nın sanat tarihini sadece batılı sanatçılar üzerinden yazmasına karşı çıktığı “Modern Sanat Tarihi Batı’nın Bir Oldu Bittisidir” adlı bir manifesto yayınlar.
Bedri Baykam is one of the pioneers of the “Neo-Expressionism”
movement in post-1980 art in Turkey. He studied art at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland between 1980 and 1983. He uses different expressive techniques ranging from abstract to figurative and from installations to performance art, bringing to the fore personal stories and contemporary practice, sometimes through a poetic expressionism and other times through collages of the most simple objects. He created paintings and actions that contain political and social and meticulous documentation, these paintings were exhibited sketchy characters of his childhood pictures; collages made of messages amidst the political apathy of the post-1980 art in the shows “Inner Landscapes II” (1988), “May 27” (1990), and new industrial waste materials; and women he photographed are milieu. In his installations “The Box of Democracy” (1987), “Kuvay-ı Milliye” (1994). In his recent paintings he creates a kind the images he juxtaposes.
