CHAPTER 7

FURTHER WORK

Executive summary

The project to write this handbook has raised a number of issues that
could be resolved by further work, for instance, the provision of software for
camera calibration using calibrated cameras. Perhaps another important area
is the establishment of codes of best practice and methods of certification for
all those who use cameras in critical applications.

7.1 Psuedo-code for calibration algorithms

All of the algorithms discussed in this document could be stated mathematically and
written into pseudo-code so that any interested party could implement the methods
using any software system.

The importance of creating a pseudo-code version is that it is both device and

compiler language independent and could conceivable be implemented using a
package such as Mathcad or Matlab.

7.2 Software for camera calibration

A software implementation of the algorithms for plumb-line calibration and 3-D

calibration could be written with a Windows 95 or Windows NT interface. The
software could also be in the form of a set of libraries that could linked to others
applications.

7.3 Short course on theory and practice of camera calibration

A short course on practical camera calibration could be offered where the basic theory
of calibration could be reviewed in the morning and some practical examples offered
in the afternoon. Alternatively a two day course could be supplied.

7.4 Analysis of current methods of calibration

An analysis could be performed of current methods of camera calibration and

recommendations made concerning how these methods could be improved in terms of
accuracy or traceability to a defined standard.

7.5 Identification of best-practice and certification of calibration procedures

For important measurement procedures using cameras it may be considered important

to establish that best-practice procedures are published and disseminated. In some
cases it may be necessary to have some form of certification of procedures. Such work
would be complementary to other general issues of software traceability and
calibration.
