1.

2(i). 1,388 women are in the data set and 212 smoked while pregnant. (1388-1176)

2(ii). An average of 2.09 cigarettes were smoked per day. The average is not a good measure of the
“typical” woman in this case because it accounts for 1,176 of the 1,388 women who do not smoke
during pregnancy. This means that nearly 85% of the data includes women who do not smoke and based
off the data, it can be concluded that the “typical” women do not smoke during pregnancy. Also, the
median number of cigarettes smoked while pregnant is zero.
2(iii). The average number of cigarettes smoked by pregnant women per day is 13.67. The average is
higher than my answer in part (ii) because the previous average included women who did not smoke
during pregnancy. However, the average below only accounts for the average of women who smoked
one or more cigarettes while pregnant.

2(iv).

The average of fathereduc is 13.19 years. The reason the number of observations is only 1,192 is
because 196 observations have a missing value for fathereduc.

2 (v). Average family income is $29,030 and the standard deviation is $18,740. (29.03x1000 and
18.74x1000)
