V-RAY FOR 3DS MAX: RANDOM COLOR TECHNIQUES

This document gives a sample lesson plan for involving the Random Color Techniques module into a
lecture

Lecture
• Discuss cases where you may need to create multiple shaders that are almost the same except
for one or two parameters.
o Fruits in a bowl can have tiny variations in the color
o Tiles on a wall have the same type of Fresnel reflections but different diffuse colors
o Glass jars can have the same material with different reflection colors
• You may want to find and show some images that demonstrate the above examples
• Discuss how we can use the V-Ray Multi-Sub Texture to feed different colors or textures to a
parameter of a material.
• Discuss the subject of Object IDs and Material IDs and how to assign them
• Discuss the subject of custom object attributes and how to assign them
• Discuss how to use the V-Ray User Color utility map
• Note that the subject will get much more clear during the demonstration cycle

Demonstration
• In this cycle, you can use the provided scene and handout to demonstrate how to use the V-
Multi-Sub Texture map and the V-Ray User Color utility map to create color variations in a shader

Activity
• In this cycle, you are going to let your students experiment with the provided scene. You may
want to give them the provided handouts to use as a guideline
