Though in recent years much attention was directed to its sensual properties, the focus is increasingly turning to its performance. Larger formats, thinner panes, and new processes: in this issue wo present the state-of-the-art develop- ments, But that doasn't mean that the aesthetic quali ties of glass are disregarded; instead, they vary cor- responding to the application. The building envelope of a World Trade Organization administration edifice in Geneva featured in this issue appears dematerialised, the colourful photovoltaic modiules Incorporated in the facade of the SwissTech Convention Center in Lausanne produce a kaleidoscope effect; and the generously glazed new skin added to a forty-year: old city hall in Zealand complately transforms the building's character. 201902 DETAN, Built Transparency ~ Nineteenth Century Greenhouses: (Ohristian Schittich Thay are among the nineteenth century's ‘most fascinating structures, yet tend to bs overlooked by classical architectural hist. ry: the lacelke greenhouses of iron and glass whose form and articulation ara de rived solely rom functional and technical requirements, New construction methods and formal innovations ~ later to became fundamentals of modern architecture - are brought to boar in these early manifesta: tions of industrialised construction, cause thair racers - typically garden. ers or engineers - were completely tree of the conventions of the architecture of their time and questions of sive, they were able to omploy unusual material combinations as \well as the nascent potential of prefabricat- fed construction ~ but also experimant with hitherto unknown aesthetics, And tne bulld ing codes for these puraly utilitarian struc: tures for plants ~initally, stays of longer duration by paople were not foreseen — allow greater leeway. “Those factors, in combination with incipient industrialised methods for the production of iron and glaze, during a phase in which an increasing number of exotic plants was ar- ving in Europe from the eokanias ~ arate crats and wealthy inaividuals were keen to cultivate and exhibit them — led to the con- struction of unprecedented spaces. It ithadn'tibeen forthe experience gained by erecting these greenhouses, pioneering builcings such as Joseph Paxton’s Crystal Palace (1851) would not have been possi: ble, Alter all, Paxion also obtained his structural knioededge by building green houses ~ although not much remains of tham today Even before Paxton entered the scene, John Claudius Loudon ~ like Paxton, also tained as a gardener - established the fundamental principles of greenhouse ‘construction. In his numerous eerly-nine teerth-century texts and studies he seeks to define ther ideal “characteristics”. His sole point of departure: the neads of the plants. ‘To allow the greatest possible amount of light to enter their interiors, Loudon insists that the ratio of structure to glass bo kept as low as possible, and the load-bearing members be as slender as possible. Furthermore, he develops the eurlinear ‘forms that are to become associated with the greenhouses of his day. In his works he makes reference to the ideas of Sir George Mackenzie, wha in an 1815 lecture had proposed orienting a greenhouse’s skin paralle tothe celestial dome, and conse: uenty, the path ofthe sun, 60 that the rays ‘of both the high aftuco cummer sun ang the low alttude winter sun would strike the panes of glass porpendiulary to thor sur faces. In this manner the amount of retlect- fd light is minimised. Claualus Loudon's therough, consistent principles lead to the dynamo, timeless freenhouse fows erected during the fest half of the nineteenth century the ones we most admire today. Later, whon architac- ture increasingly gained influence on the construction of greenhouses and infused it vith the stylistic notions ofits time, they be- {gan to ose their clear forms, With the fo lowing Images and text (an entirely subjec tive selection) a few of the most impressive reechouses are presented. The continued develop. iment of the production and processing technologies of glass and the continual im provement of “application-ready" products play a decisive role in mastering increasing ‘demands regarding functional require iments and the quaet for new aesthetic forms of expression ‘A number of spectacular architecture pr jects and navel design cancepta have tg. gered the developments in this fel, Im provements in planning and simulation tools ease realzatons, or even meke them ppoaeibla at al. Tha tranaferral of develop ‘ments from other technical disciplines to tho construction sector has also pavad the \way for innovative glass products. In ad tion, other time-honoured manufacturing and processing methods have been im- proved upon and retined in recent years, thereby significantly enhancing quality and availabilty, as well as varity and dimen- sions, of the glass produced. The improved avalabiliy of certain types of glass — for ‘example, laweiron glaae or technical glass Geveloped for special apalications ~ in combination with new pra-strassing, lami ation and coating techniques, makes it possible fo dacisvaly improve the perfor mance of many glass products, Last but not least, these new methods of processing {glasa and tating is eurface opan up options for remarkable design solutons, Large-tommat olass inrecent years the developments in glass processing have pushed back in some casos significantly ~ the limits of technical viabilty, availabilty and size restrictions. So far, the dmonsions of the largest available float glase panes in Europe (3.21 x 6.09 metres) have boen tha dotermining factor in the maximum format in glass processing hile the 18-metre-ong,triple-glazing units (utlizing fost glass) that were presented at Glesstec 2010 set new standards, the cor- responding production technique was not immediately available for application. In the meantime, hoswover, it possible a ther: mally pre-svess over-sized panel formats weith a longth of up to 18,00 matras (tough: ened glass), to laminate them (laminated lass, laminated safety glass), and to equip them with funetianal coatings for thermal and solar protection, or apply ceramic trit (il. 1). Corresponcingly, insulatad glazing Units measuring 3.21 x 15.00 metres can be manufactured as 3-glass-ply of 4-olass ply panels that fulfil rigorous thermal and safety standards, as well as the structural requirements. More and more, however. the woight, netalation techniques and logis cal requirements associated with such large formats have become problematic. Glass lamination plays 2 decisive role in functional and safety-related aspocts of glazing and facade construction. A wide of interlayers are available; they are typleally synthetic films such as PVE, (polyvinyl butyral, TPU (thermoplasti polyurethane}, SG (eafety glass interlayer lonoplast/Sentry@ias) or EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate). ‘The glass and the interayers are bonded in a pressure chambor (autoclave). Particular ly in comparison to conventional PVE, the safely glass interlayer (SG) has considera bly higher shear strength and facilitates production of very large glass laminates. ‘Tho advantage isa significantly highor load-bearing capacity and the potential to reduce - for the same load - thickness and ight. The high strength of he laminate also facilitates improved edge stability, as ‘well as weather- and temperature-resit ance, making it possible to employ it for large loads or for larger spans. Moreover, metallic connecting pisces can be in pos- tioned bnetieon the sheate of glase ar lami rated to the surface, These metal fitings ‘enable optically minimizad force-locking connections of ojass elements that can, in contrast fo pure glass-adhesive connec tions, be taken apart again if necessary The progress that has been mace in the lamination technique fer larger formats anc DETAIL 2 Tecinelogy 168 minimised connection points becomes pat ticularly clear in the redesigned entrance to tho Apple Store on Naw York's Fith Ave- nue. The glass cube with panels 10 metres inlength designed by Bohlin Oywinsk Jackson Avehitects and the engineering fir Eckersley O'Callaghan frst opened in 2008. The olass load-bearing structure originally consisted of 24 vertical and ten horizontal glass tine of 5x12 mm heat strengthened, pre-stressed glass (German ‘acronym: TVG), with a maximum glass pan- el length of 6.90 meves, Therefore twas necessary to buttjin the laminated glass to amve at the require length of 10 me- tres, In the newer design (2011), 5-glase ply laminated safety glass pane's measur ing 10:30 x 9,80 matres were employed, making it possible to reduce the number of, Units from 72 (inthe intial dasign) to 12 (in the more recent one). Atthe same time, the number of components inthe flexurally vig: id self-supporting roof structure was re duced from 96 to just three. Inthe realization ofthis projact, thanium connecting pieces have been incorporated intho laminate assembly fr the frst time. ‘These connectors neariy invisibly fasten the vertical seams of the autar panes tothe lass fins. By employing state-of the-art glass technology with far fewer connection points, a greater degree of transparency was attained ils. 2~4), Shaping glass Inthe meantime, curved and free-form Glass surfaces have become part of the ‘stablishod architectural rapartoira, n tho production of such glass, one must distin uish between hot-lorming and so-called lamination bending (also known as cold bending). In ot forming the pane is heated land tormad with tha halp of a mould oF gravity. When the pane cools, itretains ts form. Aside trom curved float glass, with this pro- css, thermally pre-sitessed glass, laminat fd glass and insulated glazing units can al so be shaped. The highly transparent root supported by four laminated glass beams along the edge of the root impressively demonstrates the present state of the art in the application of avernead insulated glaz- ing units il 5). ‘Tho design of the 16-metre-tal glase stu. tures of the Bombay Sapphire Headquar- tors, which was proparad by Heatherwick Studio (2014, Ils. 6, 7), is an example of tho combined use of diferent lamination bending processes to produce complexly formed glazing, The pleated building enve- lopes of the central, publicly accessible ffeenhouses consisis of curved stainless steal beams, tansion cables of stanioes steal and glass panels shaped in a two- stage process. The vertical loads are ais: tributed via stainless steel beams, while the ‘lass panes are utlized for lateral bracing, By empioying tension cables at the glass fseame the wicth of tha beams could be held to minimum. Laminated safety glass Units of 2x 6 mm lowiton, ullra-white toughened glass with an SG interlayer were ‘miployad to attain the greatest possible light permeability and ansparency. ‘The facades’ inner surfaces were given a hydrophobie coating. n the frst etop, the single curvature cylindrical panels with a radius measuring lees than 16,00 metres ‘were hot-formed in the workshop. Panes vith a radius greater than 16,00 metros ‘were shaped by means cf form-supporting lamination. For double-curvature glass seg- ments the final form was attained on site by fastening the glass in the desired shape. ‘This overall approach made it possiblo 10 produce all of the bulking envelope's radi ‘of curvature - down to the smallest radius, hich measured 2.03 metres, Thus, the desired effect was attained in optimal pre cess. The increased stability of sighty jourved glaee is advantageous toa recently presented development: large format vert- cal tiple glazing, Generally speaking, panels in formats up to 2 motros wide and § to 8 mates high (lenaths of upto 12 metres are in prepara: tion) are only supported on their upper an lower edges [il 19). Owing to their lens shaped geometry they can be used in ree spane without vertical supporting structure, By cambering the outer panes the glass thicknesses required for such spans can be reduced by 90 to 50% and, correspond ingly, the weight ofthe unit kept low. In such cases the outer panes ~ currently stl ‘of toughened glass ~are “cold” pre- formed. A patented spacer system, opt mized with respect to the arising sheer {orces, 12 employed to clasa the panel's long edges. The centre pane of partially pre-stressed glass provides adcitional sta- bility and residual stability in case of a total failure of tho remaining system, ‘The assembly possesses a Us-value of about 0.7 Wire and is quite tolerant to ime precision in the fatness of the respective panes. Further advantages are its lov ‘woight and tho high degree of waneparon- cy due to the thinness of the panes. Laminated glass employing thin glass is expected to faciltate further improvement ‘of the distances that can be spanned.
