PREFACE, is reference book ¢Chromosome numbers of flowering plants», summarizing the results of 80 years’ investigations of chromosome numbers, contains more or less exhaustive information on the species of the World’s flora described up to 1967, and comprising altogether 35 000 names of species belong. ing to 272 families and 4669 genera. Some new data on the chromosome numbers of certain species indigenous to the U. 8. S. R., including about 1000 species investigated at the Laboratory of Cyto- logy of the V. L. Komarov Botanical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the U. 8.5. R., are published here for the first time. ‘The principle of the careful retention of the generic and specific names used in the works cited that served as the sources of information on the chromosome numbers, is strictly observed in the refe- rence book. Tho spelling of the specific and generic names has heen corrected when it was Wrong o? when it had to be emended according to the rules of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature. ‘The abbreviations of the names of authors of specific and generic names have been standardized The authors of some names are not given in those cases where they were not given in the source cited, in the cases of controversy between the sources concerning these names, and also in the eases where the spelling of these names was unrecognizable. The principle followed by the authors of this rele. rence book was not to add anything of their own and to retain as far as possible everything given by the literary source, observing only the correctness of the spelling. ‘The taxonomic limit of each family, as itis adopted in the reference book, is based on the last (12 th) edition of Engler's «Syllabus der Pflanzentamilien» (1964). The synonymy of generic and specific names has not been reduced or eliminated; therefore the same genus or species “is sometimes. (although rarely) listed more than once (usually no more than twice). Naturally, the specifie name in such cases may be the samo, but may differ. Only those eases are omitted, where the same genus cited under different names, ‘is assigned to different families. The homonymous generic ames may he easily reeognized by the avghor's names Ii the authors or the editors of this reference book had pursued the poliey of reducing the synonymy of the 35.000 specific names included therein with appropriate scientific accuracy, it would have taken too much time and would have delayed the publication of this reference book for several years, ‘The search for synonyms would have entirely excluded the possibility of the incorporation of the most recent data on the chromosome numbers into the text of the reference book shortly before it was printed, and thus prompt publieation of the reference book would have become impossible, ‘The names of families with their authors are given according to the latest International Code of Botanical Nomenclature» adopted in Edinburgh (1966). The generic names with their authors were 6 PREFACE ‘chockod by comparison with the last (7_th) odition of J. C. Willis's book «A dictionary of the flowe- Sing plants and fernse, revised by Airy Shaw (1967) and J. E. Dandy «ndex of generic names of vas- Juler plants 1753-1774 (1967). However, oven in those cases where a genus had an appropriate saat eonservandam or some other legitimate name e. g., based on priority, the generic names, ised in the literary sources cited, were never replaced by any other names. “AI these means contributed with the sufficient identity of the data in the reference book to tho corresponding data given by the literary sources, which is, of course perfectly indispensable. For sath species all the somatic chromosome numbers (2n) ever established are given, irrespective ‘of whether they were determined in somatic calls or in the cells of reproductive organs. In the cases GIhece several chromosome numbors are knowa for the same species, they are listed in numerical order. Cheomosome numbers for certain intraspecific taxa given in some original works were transferr- ed tc the reference book mostly in those cases where they differed from the basie chromosome number Known for the species to which these taxa belong. Chromosome numbers of haploids, polyploids Aid hybrids obtained oxperimentally, as a rule, are not given. Accessory chromosomes, fragments dnd approximate chromosome nambers are designated by the symbols «Bo, ef» and «=» respectively. ‘The anthors who havo determined chromosome numbers are cited In chronological order, the year of the publication of each work being indicated. With vory rare exceptions they were cited by the auth- sts of fhe reforonce book from the original works. Only a few of them,.if the original works that were Sot available are cited (in the soction for referonces») from other sources given in brackets. If the year Of publication of cartain data is not indicated, it moans that these data have not been published by the author in a special work, but wero roported for the first time by another author. ‘The following abreviations are adopted for the largest and most important reference books (for the full descriptions of which see Bibliography): C. n. £, 1984, .., EX. 1967 — IOPB Chromosome number reports. Spocial tables are given for the genera comprising over ten species studied cytologically. Theso tables show the quantitative distribution of spocios among all the somatic chromosome number clas- 8 known for the given genus, as well a3 the number of spacies with intraspecific polyploidy (B. 1.) Gnd with a few different chromosome numbers (P. x.). Despite their purely conventional and relative Ehaeacter, these tables give a certain idea of tho distribution of chromosome numbers within a genus, nd information about haste chromosome numbers and the specific cytogenetic features of the given genus: they are indicative of the extent to which a genus has been studied eytologically and in some éases make it possible to detect errors ‘The referance book ends with a bibliography comprising 7000 publications including 607 works of Russian authors, Full titles are given for all the works included in the bibliography: Acanthus 1.
