KARL FRIEDRICH SCHINKEL

• Was a Prussian architect, city planner


and painter
• Also designed furniture and stage sets
• Was a famous German architect
• His most famous buildings are found in
and around Berlin

Born 13th March 1781


Died 9th October 1841
• Designed both Neoclassical and Neogothic buildings
• Moved to Berlin where he was an architecture student under Architect
Friedrich Gilly (1772-1800)
• Took a trip to Italy then returned to Berlin in 1805 and become a painter
• He gave up on painting and went back to architecture
• In 1809 he designed furniture for Quenn Louise’s palace
• In 1815 he was appointed State Architect in Prussia. He became
responsible for reshaping Berlin
• Most of his designs in Berlin vwere based on the revival of various
historical styles such as Greek Revival
• He worked under Frederick William III.
