PHOTOGRAPHY TECHNIQUES

I. DESCRIPTION.

Personally I think, photography is the art of painting with light, because through this process,
before chemical and now digital, a fact or circumstance can be perpetuated in an image.

According to the needs and demands of photography we will use a camera (mobile phone,
compact, bridge, reflex, mirrorless); This regularly presents several functions that can be
chosen to make a capture, (so from A to Z we have: Manual Mode, Aperture Priority, Shutter
Priority, Program Mode, Automatic Mode), generally these functions are based on the
control of the amount of light that is perceived, this is called exposure, then we can say that
exposure is the process by which the light is absorbed by the photosensitive material (maybe
the sensor when we talk about digital cameras, or the film or roll in analog photography).

All this process generates a product called photography which give us a message, which
depending on what you want to show takes the photographic technique as a tool to achieve
its purpose, which is usually to communicate or record an event.

What is Photographic Technique?

The Photographic Technique carries out the execution of some specific knowledge about
photography (exposure triangle) that are essential to make a particular kind of photography
(Landscape, Nature, Portrait, Sport, Night and Astrophotography).

So that we can say that the Photographic Technique is the correct use of a camera and the
knowledge of the functions and options it presents (Shutter Speed, Diaphragm Aperture,
ISO, exposure meter or light meter, light measurement mode, focus mode and white
balance). Achieving the suitable relationship of the functions of a camera starts with the
correct use of the exposure triangle, which is a graphic representation that summarizes the
physical laws that influence light, in a nutshell, it explains the main elements that affect
exposure, and these are:

1. Diaphragm Aperture: Size of the hole that lets light to pass from the lens to the
sensor.
2. Shutter Speed: Value that determines how long the sensor will be receiving light.
3. ISO Sensitivity: Tells the sensor how much light to absorb.
The interaction of the parameters of the exposure triangle originates concepts such as
(Depth of Field and Long or Short Exposure) by means of which distinction and originality
are generated in the photographs, as a matter of fact we achieve the attention on the object
or subject of interest within the image.

 What is depth of field?

It is the space that exists in front and behind the focused plane, which is regulated by the
aperture of the diaphragm; we talk about less depth of field, when there are few sharp and
defined elements within the image (achieved with wider opening of the diaphragm, that is to
say, wide open) and on the other hand more depth of field when several elements of the
image are in focus, sharply (we get it with narrower opening of the diaphragm).

 What is long and short exposure?

It is the time that the camera's sensor or film is exposed to light and is controlled by the
shutter speed; when the time is short the movement is frozen and on the contrary when it is
long the movement is captured.

II. CONCLUSIONS.
- In conclusion the photographic technique is an action that contributes to elaborate a
specific graphic message, through the registration of a fact or circumstance.
- Photographic techniques are based on the relationship of some specific knowledge
about photography (exposure triangle).
- Depth of field and short and long exposure contribute to the particularity of a
photograph.
III. SUGGESTIONS.
- A photographer should have a thorough knowledge of the functions and operation of
a camera to achieve clean photographs.
- When you start as a photographer, first you should learn how the exposure triangle
works.
- If you like photography you should learn everything related to photography
techniques, like depth of field, which we use it to direct attention to the elements with
the most visual weight.
