II. NAME THE FOLLOWING:

1. Objects that emit light of their own.- Luminous object

2. A material which allows partial light to pass through it.—Translucent object
3. Bouncing off or change in the direction of light from surface.--- Reflection
4. A device which forms a photograph like image of a bright object on a screen. —Pinhole camera
5. A dark patch on a bright surface formed behind an opaque object-- Shadow
6. A highly polished surface from which regular reflection takes place—Mirror
III. Give reasons-

1. Moon is non-luminous body.

Ans- Moon doesn’t has its own light. It reflects the sunlight falling on it. Hence, Moon is
non-luminous body.
2. In a completely dark room, we can’t see shadow.
Ans- In a dark room, shadow is not formed because there is no source of light. Shadow are
produced only when light falls on an opaque object.
3. We cannot correctly determine the length of the shadow of an object.
Ans- The length of a shadow depends on the angle at which light falls on an object. Hence,
we can’t correctly determine the length of the shadow of an object.
4. We see light first and hear the sound later during thunderstorm.

Ans- We see the lightning before we hear the thunder because light travels faster
than sound.

5. Why it is unsafe to see solar eclipse with naked eyes?

Ans- when we see solar eclipse with naked eyes, it causes permanent damage to the eyes.
Hence we should view through safety glass or pinhole camera instead seeing with naked
eyes.
6. The amount of light that passes through different materials depends on their transparency. Which
material is the best choice to make the following items? (Hint: Clear glass or smoked glass) Give
reasons for your answer.
i) A car windshield
ii) A bathroom wind pane

Ans-i) A car windshield- should be made of clear glass as it is transparent and we can see
clearly through it.

ii) A bathroom wind pane- should be made up of smoked glass as it is translucent and it
allows light to pass through it partially. So even though the room is lighted but nothing can
be seen clearly.

IV.Answer the following:

1. What are the conditions required for the formation of shadow?

Ans- The conditions required for shadow formation are-
I. An opaque object.
II. A source of light
III. Screen
IV. Object must be placed in the path of light
2. Differentiate between shadow & Image.

shadow Image
1. Definition A shadow is formed when a An image is formed when the
path of light gets obstructed by light gets reflected from a
an opaque object. mirror or any polished surface.
2. Colour Always black It has colour of the object
3. Outline of object A shadow is a dark outline of An image provides all the
an object which shows no details of an object such as
details. size, colour etc.
4. Reversal It does not undergoes left-right It undergoes left-right reversal.
reversal

3. How does light enable us to see non-luminous objects?

Ans- Non- luminous objects reflect the light they receive from luminous objects. We can see
non- luminous object, when light reflected by it reaches to our eyes.

4. How will you convert a glass sheet into translucent sheet?

Ans- There are a couple of ways to convert a glass sheet into a translucent sheet.
(a) By applying a thin layer of oil or paint on the glass sheet.
(b) By placing a butter paper on the glass sheet.

5. Differentiate between Regular & irregular reflection.

Regular reflection Irregular reflection
When parallel beam of light is reflected back as When parallel beam of light is reflected in
parallel beam, it is called as regular reflection. different directions after striking a rough
surface, it is called irregular reflection.
Occurs from smooth surfaces like mirror, Occurs from rough surfaces like wood, table,
silver spoon, clear water etc. door etc.

6. Mention the factors on which nature & size of a shadow depend.

Ans- The nature & size of the shadow depends on-
I. Size of the source of light
II. Size of the object
III. The distance between source of light & the object.
IV. The angle at which the light is falling on an object.
7. List any three uses of plane mirror.
Ans- In Periscope, make up mirror, car wing, torch light, wardrobe, kaleidoscopes.

8. Differentiate between luminous & non-luminous object.

Luminous object. Non-luminous object.

Objects which can emit their own light. Objects which can’t emit their own light.
Eg- Stars, sun, Bulb , candle etc. Eg- Tree, wall ,moon , planet etc.

9. A student covered a torch with red cellophane sheet to obtain red light. Using the red light, she
obtains a shadow of an opaque object. She repeats this activity with green and blue light. Will the
colour of the light affect the shadow? Explain.
Ans-The colour of the light has no effect on the colour of its shadow. Shadows are always
black because shadows are formed when light rays get blocked by an opaque object.

10. Why don’t we see the shadow of aeroplanes and birds flying in the sky?
Ans-Shadows depend upon the distance of the object from the source of light and the
screen. Since an aeroplane or a bird fly very high above the ground there is no screen
where the shadow will be casted. So, shadow cannot be formed.

11. Explain with an activity that light travels in a straight line.

Ans-Light a candle and fix it on a table. Take a piece of hollow pipe or a long rubber tube.
Look at the candle flame through the pipe. The flame of the candle is visible.
Now take a bent pipe and try to view the flame of the candle flame is not visible. This proves
that light always travels in a straight line.
12. How can you form a rectangular shadow from a cylinder?
Ans-If the curved surface of the cylinder is placed perpendicular to the path of light, the
shape of shadow becomes rectangular.

13. Explain construction & working of pinhole camera with suitable diagram.
ANS- A pinhole camera consists of a cardboard or wooden box having a pinhole in its front
face and a translucent grounded glass or waxed paper screen at the back. The distance
between the pinhole and screen can be adjusted by moving the screen towards or away
from the pinhole.
When the pinhole of the camera is turned towards a bright object, a diminished inverted
image of the object is formed on the screen.

14. Three torches A, B and C shown in figure are switched on one by one. The light from which of the
torches will not form a shadow of the ball on the screen.

Ans- The light from torch C will not form a shadow of the ball on the screen. Torch C is
parallel to the screen and light travels in straight line.
15. A football match is being played at night in a stadium with flood lights ON. You can see the shadow
of a football kept at the ground but cannot see its shadow when it is kicked high in the air. Explain.

Ans - We can see the shadow of football lying on the ground because the ground acts as a
screen for it. However, when the football is kicked high, the ground, which is acting as a
screen is away from the football, hence no shadow of the football will be formed on the
ground.

16. Differentiate between transparent, translucent and opaque.

Transparent Translucent Opaque

An object which allows light An object which allows only a An object which does not
to pass through it. part of light to pass through it. allow light to pass
through it.

Example : Glass, Water Example : Grounded glass, Example: Wood , Stones
