Compare the nursing curriculum of the Philippines with Western and European

countries.
Nursing profession, besides being the most trusted of all, is considered
today as one of the most important member of healthcare industry. An
institution , a hospital per se will not run without nurses. Nurses have the
special role in taking care of patients, providing the program for our patients in
maintaining a healthier living and guiding them to recovery. Nursing
education throughout the whole world have a common denomination ; that is
the goal to provide nusing students the required foundation to be a great nurse
all patients can have.
Philippine Nursing curriculum consist of 4 year program on higher
education to complete a bachelor of science in nursing degree. The BSN
program is designed to offer a wholesome training experience, in which
professional courses are taught with an emphasis on the nursing concepts,
which are complemented by Related Learning Experiences. After completing
the nursing program, nurses perform a direct patient care, leadership and
management and research. The Philippine BSN curriculum is compliant with
international standards of core competencies in the delivery of the program and
the assessment methods.
However, nursing program is completed within three years in Western
countries , for instance in United Kingdom. Their curriculum focuses in
demonstrating professional values, teamwork and management , decision
making in the nursing practice and interpersonal skills. Nursing and Midwifery
Council regulates the nursing profession in the kingdom. Understanding
Public health principles help nuses to respond to assess the needs of different
groups of people in the community. Nursing practice in the United Kingdom
focuses also in the therapeutic communication and patient family education
which also is included in their curriculum . More importantly, a nurse must
keep in touch with the trends of changing knowledge in delivering quality care
and constantly review evidence on best health practices.
With this short comparison of the nursing curriculum of two countries,
it can be identified that Philippine nursing education needs to give focus more
on research which can be included in the training practicum; to provide
nursing student critical skills in carrying out evidenced based research .
