Free Slack:

It refers to the amount of time for which an activity can be delayed without delaying the
earliest start of any successor activity. If the task has no successors, free slack is the amount
of time that a task can be delayed without delaying the entire project's finish date.
Example of Free slack:
An activity D of a project has an earliest starting date of 2st March and latest start of 13th
march. While, a successor activity E of the project has an earliest starting date of 15 th March
and latest start of 25th March. Hence activity D must be completed before 25th March so that
its successor activity E is not delayed.

Total Slack:
Total slack is the amount of time a task can be delayed before the project finish date is
delayed.
Example of Total Slack slack:
Consider a network diagram as shown in Fig 1. In this network diagram activities, A-B-D
cannot be delayed because delaying them would result in delay of whole project so this
means that their total slack is zero, while activity C can be delayed for 2 days, this delay
represents total slack of activity C.
