Tourism potential of Timișoara

Student: Bucătaru Andreea

Grupa 205
1. Location

Timișoara is the capital city of Timiș County and the main economic, social and cultural center
in western Romania. Located on the Bega River, Timișoara is considered the informal capital
city of the historical Banat. It is also named “Little Vienna” or “The City of Parks”.

Timişoara is a multicultural city, influenced by the different ethnic communities: German,

Hungarian, Serbian, Bulgarian, Rroma,Italian and Greek.

Cosmopolitanism and modernity meet a history that has grown over centuries. For example,
Timișoara was the first European city and the second in the world after New York to introduce
electric street lighting in 1884.

2. How to get to Timișoara

If you are from Romania, you can get to Timisoara by car or by train. If you live in another
country and want to visit Timisoara, the fastest way to get there is by plane. Besides the road and
rail access routes, the city also has an international airport (Traian Vuia International Airport)
that facilitates the circulation of potential tourists from all over Europe.

3. Types of tourism that can be practiced in Timișoara

Culture is at home in Timişoara as it is the second cultural pole in the country from the point of
view of the size and diversity of the cultural offer after Bucharest.

The types of tourism practiced in Timișoara are especially transit and business tourism, urban
tourism, cultural-historical tourism, medical tourism, but also spa and recreation tourism and
hunting and fishing tourism.

In 2016, Timișoara won the title of European Capital of Culture for 2021 (2023), so the city
wants to become a place where cultural excellence gives self-confidence to its citizens and the
power to bring about change through involvement.

4. Cultural – historical tourism

The most representative form of tourism, from my point of view, it’s the cultural-historical one,
and that’s becauseTimisoara is a city of diversity that stands out for its varied architecture, its
parks and gardens, its historic Baroque center, as well as its valuable museums. Also, the
numerous churches and synagogues, the fascinating culture, the restaurants and the vibrant
nightlife make Timisoara the most western city in the country.

The tourist offer is completed by medieval castles and fortresses (Huniade Castle from
Timișoara), architectural and monastic ensembles (Baroque Palace from Timișoara) , cultural
events and festivals, ethnography and craft art .
Brück house or palace is a building in Piața Unirii built in 1910 by architect Szekely Laszlo in
Art-Nouveau and Secession styles, with a mildly eclectic character. It is a four-level building;and
at the ground floor there is a drug store. The Brück family built building has been beautifully
restored in 2012.

The New Fabric Synagogue is a Jewish place of worship in the city of Timisoara. It was built
when Timișoara was a part of Transylvania and integrated in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The
style is Neo-Moorish; it remains one of the most impressive buildings in the city.

Löffler Palace from Piata Victoriei was built between 1912 and 1913 by the family and firm of
businessman Leopold Löffler, in order to serve as firm headquarters and home for him and his
three sons. The Palace is a four-storey construction with beautiful façades; the one which faces
Piata Victoriei has a much more simple design.

5. Lesser known attractions in Timișoara

Theresia Bastion is the only bastion that still exists in the city of Timisoara during the period of
Banat's belonging to the Austrian Empire. Being the only bastion in Timișoara, it is also known
by the people of Timisoara as the Citadel Bastion.

Theresia Bastion comprises most of the defensive wall of the old fortresses of Timisoara, which
has been preserved to this day. There is another fragment from the walls of the former fortress in
the Botanical Park and another fragment, on Alexandru Ioan Cuza Street.

Another attraction is the bega river, where you can take walks on the shore, take photo shoots
and enjoy the view and the peace. It is located in the center of Timisoara and it has parks on both
sides. The best views are in autumn and spring.

The Bega River characterizes the cityscape of Timișoara. It separates the old town core from the
factory and workers’ quarter of the city.

Iulius Town is a large multifunctional urban complex in Timisoara. The complex includes a park,
a kindergarten and a primary school, as well as an event center.

Iulius Congress Hall It is the center of events in Iulius Town that offers customers premium
services for organizing conferences, congresses, seminars, business meetings and private parties.
The rooms are designed by Italian designers, very elegant and with details of a special
refinement.
