Eve little puppies dug a hole under the fence and
went for a walk in the wide, wide world.
Through the meadow they went, down the road,
over the bridge, across the green grass, and up the hill,
one after the other.

And when they got to the top of the hill, they
counted themselves: one, two, three, four. One little
puppy wasn't there.

The first little puppy said, "Now where in the world
is that poky little puppy ?"
The· second little puppy said, "He's certainly not on
top of th.e hil[.'"

T.h e thilrd little puppy sai.d, "Hers not going down
the other side of the hill. The o.n ly t hing I can see going
down the hill is a fuzzy caterpillar.' '

And 't he fourth little puppy said, 1 'He's not coming


up this side of the hill. The o,nly thing I can see coming
up the hill is a quick, green lizard."

But when they Iooked down at the grassy pla,ce

near the bottom of the hill, there he was, running round

and round, his nose to the ground. uwhat is he doing?"

And down they went to see, roly~poly, pell-melE,
t umble-bumbte, till they came to the green grass; and
t here they stopped short.
"What in the world are you doing?"

The pokey little puppy wiggled his nose. "I smell
something!''
Then the four little puppies began to sniff, and they
smelled it, too.
"Rice pudding!"
And home they went, as fast as they could go, over
the bridge, up the road , through the meadow, and under
the fence. And there, sure enough, was dinner waiting
for them, with rice pudding for dessert .

But their mother was gr eatly displeased. "So you're
the little puppies. who dig holes und.e r fences! No rice
pudding tonight!" And she made them go straight to
bed.
But the poky little puppy came home after everyone
was sound asleep.
He ate up the rice pudding and crawled into bed as
happy as a lark.

The next morning someone had filled the hole and
put up a sign. The sign read:·

BUT . . .
The five little puppies dug a hole under the fence,
just the same, and went !for a walk in the wide, wide

And the fourth little puppy said, "He's nQt c.o ming
up this side of t h,e hill. The only thin.g I can see c.oming
up the hill is a brown hop-·t oad."

But wh.e n they looked down at the grassy place near
the bottom. of the hill, there was th,e :p oky little puppy,.
sitting still as a stone,. with his head cocked to one side
and his ears up.
"What is he doing?" the four little .P'u.p pies asked
one anoth,e r. And down the,y went to see, roEy-·poly, pell-
mell, tumble-bumble, ·till they cam.e to the green grassi·
and the.r e they stopped short.
"What in the world are you ,doing?'''
"I he.a r somethin,g !" said. the poky little puppy.
Th.e .f our little puppies listened, and the,y could. hear
it, too. ''Chocolate custard!"
"'Someone is spooning it into our bowls !''

And home they went as fast as they coul,d. go, over



the bridge) up the road, thr,o ugh th,e meadow, and under
the fence. An1d there,. sure eno·u gh, was dinner waiting
for them, with choco,l ate custard for dessert.
But their mother was greatly dis.p leased. "So you'.r e
the little puppies who will d.ig holes under fences!

No chocolate custard tonight!" And she made them go
straight to bed.
But the poky little puppy came home after everyone
else was sound asleep, and he ate up all the chocolate
custard and ,c rawled into bed as happy as a lark.
The next morning someone had filled the hole and
put up a sign.

The sign said :

BUT ...
In spit·e of that, the five little puppies dug a hole
under the fence and went for a walk in the wide, wide
world.
Through the meadow they went, down the road,
over the bridge, .a cross the green grass, and up the hill,
two and two. And whe·n they got to the top of the hill,
they counted themselves: one, two, three, four. One
little puppy was.n 't there.

The first little puppy said, "Now where in the world
is that poky little pupp.y ?"

But when they looked down at the grassy place

"I see something!H said the poky little puppy.
The four little puppies looked, and they could see
it, too . .It was a ripe, red strawberry growing t her.e in
the grass.
"Strawberry shortcake!"

unde[' the fence. And there, sure enough, was dinner
waiting fo,r t hem, with strawberry shortcake for
dessert.
But their mother said: "So you're the little puppies
who ,du.g that hole under the·fence again! No strawberry
shortcake for suppe·r tonight! " .A nd she made them go
· stra:ight to bed.
B.u t the four little pupp,i es waited till they thought
she was asleep, and th,e n they slitpped 011lt and filled up
the hole, and when they turned around, there was theitr

mother watching them.
"What good little puppies! Come have some straw-
berry shortcak,e !"
And t his time, when the poky little puppy got home,
he had to squeeze in through a wide place in t he fence.
And ther e were his four brothers and sisters, licking
the last crumbs from their sa,ucer.
"Dear me!" said his mother. "What a pity you're so
poky! Now t he strawberry shortcake is all go,ne!,"
So poky little puppy had to go to bed without a
single !bite of shortcake, and he felt very sorry for
himself.

And the next morning someone had put up a sign
