Licensing in SQL Server:

1) Processor Based (From SQL 2012 onwards it is Core Based Licensing)

To identify processors "msinfo32", and verify Processor has how many cores.

2) Per Server and User CAL (Client Access License).

Note: License validity is for life of product generally except for Volume Based
Licensing (which can vary based on company and Microsoft tie-up) mostly annually.
