Lesson 4- Contextualizing Literacy Lessons for Filipino Learners

Contextualization has been defined in numerous ways. Many terms have been used to refer to contextualization
which includes:
 Contextual teaching and learning (E. Baker et.al., 2009)
 Contextualized instruction (Parr, Edwards, & Leising, 2008; Wisely 2009)

Contextualization is done using various instructional techniques. Contextualization literacy lessons involves the
teaching of academic skills along with the specific subject matter to which such skills have to be applied. The
key instructional objective is to teach academic skills rather than the subject matter, though there are some
implicit content learning as students are exposed to subject area materials.
Contextualization refers to the educational process of relating the curriculum to a particular setting, situation or
area of application to make the competencies relevant, meaningful and useful to all learners (DepEd Order 32
s.2015).
CONTEXTUALIZATION can be described and distinguished into the following:
1. Localization
2. Indigenization
Localization is the process of relating learning content specified in the curriculum to local information and
materials from the learners’ community.
Examples of localization:
1. Names and situations used to give context to test questions or problem-solving exercises.
2. Local materials used in making instructional materials like plants, animals, delicacies
3. Local stories used in the language learning areas like Si Pagong at si Matsing
4. Translating stories, sentences, paragraphs written in another language to the language of the learners for
use in the MTB-MLE.
Indigenization refers to the process of enhancing curriculum competencies, education resources and teaching-
learning processes concerning the biogeographical, historical, and socio-cultural context of the learner’s
community. Indigenization may also involve the enhancement of the curriculum framework, curriculum design,
and learning standards of subject areas, guided by the standards and principles adhered to by the national
curriculum. Indigenous means deeply rooted to a place.
