1 Product Overview
1.1 Introduction
With the multi-mode era coming, ZTE, who is dedicated to providing comprehensive
network solutions and delivering the future-oriented quality network for the operators,
developed the ground breaking SDR unified platform with the essential feature to support
multi-mode and multi-band radio access.
Based on this innovative SDR platform, ZTE promotes a series of base stations to satisfy
different scenario requirements, including Indoor Macro, Outdoor Macro, Distributed,
Outdoor Micro, and Mini BTS.
With the developing of mobile communication, high quality networks have to be built up
to meet growing requirements. Hot spot, indoor and rural area coverage should be taken
into consideration. At the same time, telecom operators are facing challenges in
equipment room, engineering and noise pollution. As a compact BTS, ZXSDR BS8922 is
hence designed to meet these requirements.
Integrated design and MCPA make it small volume, high density, high capacity and low
power consumption. It can be used for both indoor and outdoor applications with IP65
protection. The unit can be mounted against walls, or on poles or masts.
Single unit supports up to 4 carriers with 2*2 MIMO by adopting MCPA technology. Its
appearance is shown in the following figure.
1.2 Benefits
BS8922 is about 7L/8kg, easy to transport and install. It can be mounted on the pole,
against the wall, on the tower top, etc. No dedicated equipment space is required,
easy for site acquisition and fast network deployment.
Easy Expansion
Green Node B
BS8922 supports Doherty, DPD and MCPA technologies in power amplifier module
which provides high PA efficiency. High efficiency MCPA, natural cooling and high
density design reduce the power consumption. Zero noise pollution makes it easy
for indoor installation and site acquisition.
BS8922 is the UMTS outdoor micro base station. It is also connected with RRUs for
extending the coverage. With all IP architecture, ultra small size and low power
consumption, BS8922 meets remote area coverage requirements with cleanness,
convenience, efficiency and low cost. BS8922 can be easily installed against the wall,
hung on the pole or tower or placed on the roof.
When there is the need for covering hot spots or blind areas, such as hospitals, schools,
or shopping malls, one outdoor micro base station BS8922 is applied, as shown in the
following figure.

When there is the need for extending the outdoor coverage greatly, one outdoor micro
base station BS8922 is cascaded with RRUs (e.g. R8862), as shown in the following
figure. The RRU can be cascaded with other RRUs, with the distance reaching 40Km in 4
levels at the farthest.

2 Product Architecture
By integrated design, BS8922 single unit integrates control and clock module, baseband
processing, radio unit, power management and so on. Both AC (220 V/110 V) and DC
(-48 V) power supply are supported.
BS8922 consists of baseband and RF processing board, power supply module, and dual
duplexer module. The baseband and RF processing board contains control & clock
Module, baseband processing module, RF processing module, power amplifier, dual
duplex and power module.

The control and clock module is used for control and management, and provides system
clock. Its functions are as follows:
Supports Ethernet switching function and implements data switching for service and
control flow within the system;
Monitors, controls and maintains the base station system, and providing LMT
interface;
Manages software versions and supporting local and remote software upgrade;
Provides a real-time clock for system operation and maintenance and the real-time
clock can be calibrated.
It processes the physical layer protocol and frame protocol specified by 3GPP. Its main
functions are listed as follows:
Sends the forward power coupling signal to transceiver, which does forward power
inspection;
Sends the backward power coupling signal to transceiver, which does backward
power inspection;
The software system of BS8922 consists of operating support layer and application layer,
as shown below:
UMTS Functions
OMC-B OSS
Linux
Hardware (BSP)
The operating support layer provides the functions of OSS, OAM, DBS, BRS, BRACS
and SCS to serve different BS modes.
Barrier Access Control Sub-system (BRACS) is to control the access to bear layer.
Operation Support Sub-system (OSS) is the support layer in this entire framework, which
is a hardware irrespective platform for running software and provides basic functions like
scheduling, timer, memory management, communication, sequencing control, monitoring,
alarming and logging.
Board Support Package (BSP) is the software closely connected with the board
hardware and supports Real Time Operation Support Sub-system (RT OSS) to work on
the board.
2.3 Functionality
BS8922 accomplishes the following basic functions with Uu, Iub and O&M interfaces.
With Iub interface, BS8922 connects with RNC and accomplishes the following
functions including cell management, reporting Node B measurement information,
broadcasting system Information, implementing access control from RNC, mobility
management, radio resource management and controlling, FP processing and IP
transmission management.
Supports UMTS R99 service, HSPA (DL 14.4Mbps/UL 5.76Mbps/), and HSPA+ (DL
172.8Mbps/UL 23Mbps)
Supports MBMS service, including broadcast and multicast functions (PtP & PtM)
