Written by Shumang Fredlein ( Hilti Cover illustrated by #/Jé Edited by Jemma Fredlein, Christine Ko Companion leaming materials: Textbook, audio CDs, online support materials and software ISBN 978 1 876739 67 6 Preface The 444 5 Student Workbook complements the 44% 5 textbook, Chinese Language Course, Higher Advanced Level, The activities closely follow the content in the textbook and provide a variety of opportunities for practising the four communication skills — listening, speaking, reading and writing. In the textbook, the new content is introduced in the three main texts in each lesson. All other texts, including short passages and cartoons, are to be used for revision purposes. This Workbook takes you through most of these texts to test your understanding of, and reinforce, the new language learnt. Some tasks require listening to certain texts. In these cases your teacher can play them from the audio CD or read them out loud to the class. Alternatively, if you are practising at home, you can play your downloaded eText on the computer, making sure to cover up the text on your screen or switch your monitor off. Although few, there may still be some new words in these texts, You are advised not to immediately consult the vocabulary list or the dictionary When you come across them, Paying attention to the surrounding text while listening or reading can always help you decipher their meanings. Getting used to listening to or reading content containing unfamiliar words will equip you to communicate in real life situations. When using Ni Hao 5 in the classroom and at home, you should not feel limited to learning to read and write only the new words included in the lessons. When completing activities, you are encouraged to try and incorporate words that you feel would best express your intended meaning, whether or not they have been taught. However, there is still a list of characters in textbook for you to learn to write, and these are included in the 5 4% 9) section at the end of this workbook. Maintaining correct stroke order and good proportion is essential when writing Chinese characters. Beautiful character writing, just like beautiful calligraphy, is always appreciated by the Chinese.
