In a Continuous Bioreactor with cell recycle as shown in Fig. 1, the feed flow rate and culture
volumes are F = 100 ml/h and V = 1000 mL, respectively. The system is operated under
glucose limitations, and the yield coefficient Yxs is 0.50. Glucose concentration in the feed
is Si = 10 g/L. The kinetic constants of the organism are mmax = 0.2 h-1, Ks = 1 g/L the
value of beta is 1.5 and the recycle ratio is alpha = 0.7. The system is at steady state.

a. Find the substrate concentration (S) in the recycle stream.


b. Find the specific growth rate (M) of the organism.
c. Find the cell biomass concentration in the centrifuge effluent (X2)
d. Solve it as a dynamic process; propose a process improvement; determine the Dopt.
How can you reduce the transient time? (t=80 h and INIT X = 1.0 g/L).
