DISCUSSION:

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what
must I do to inherit eternal life?”

26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”

27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and
with all your strength and with all your mind’[a] ; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] ”

Page 1
28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”

29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was
attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him
half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man,
he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him,
passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and
when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring
on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care
of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[c] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look
after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may
have.’

36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of
robbers?”

37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

What is the Parable about/Summary of the Parable

The parable of the Good Samaritan is told by Jesus in the Gospel of Luke. It is about a
traveler who is stripped of clothing, beaten, and left half dead alongside the road.

There is a priest that is going down the same road and when the priest sees the man, he
immediately passes on the other side of the road, the same as the Levite, when he is also
going down the road.

In the end, a Samaritan approached him and bandaged his wounds and cleaned it, and helped
the man to survive from the tragedy. It is indeed that the neighbor figure in the parable is the
one who shows mercy to the injured fellow man—that is, the Samaritan.

Jesus used the Parable of the Good Samaritan as an example of loving those who may not be
our friends. This is when he told the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37), to
explain that people should love everyone, including their enemies.

What is the Moral Lesson of the Parable?

The parable of the good Samaritan testifies of Christ. It teaches of the plan of salvation, the
Savior's love, and our journey towards inheriting eternal life.

It is when we love that we show we know God, for God is love.

The priest and the Levite sidestepped life when they avoided the robbers' victim.

The Samaritan (who did not even belong to the chosen people) found life when he picked up
the victim and helped him. When we help those in need, we find eternal life.

Page 2
What does God wish to tell us with the Parable?

The Lord uses this parable to teach that He is the Good Samaritan, that His atonement is
central to the plan of salvation and it heals all wounds, that His Church and priesthood and
the gift of the Holy Ghost have been restored, that our hearts and lives are changed by living
His Gospel, and He will come again, and the faithful will be exalted.

The meaning of this parable cannot be understood solely through the Bible. But it is
understood that the parable teaches the plan of God’s salvation.

ACTIVITY:

“ Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
Love your neighbour as yourself.”

Create a Reflection Paper about how Salvation in terms of this Parable of the Good Samaritan
changed your perspectives in life in terms of loving and helping people.

SCRIPT

– Slide 1 –

Everyone is familiar with parables, both Christians and non-Christians. One of the most
well-known parables is the “Parable of the Good Samaritan”, yet it is also the most
misunderstood.

Hello and good day students! My name is Sir Fonzy Estrella, and today, I will tell you a story
about the parable of the Good Samaritan.

Has anyone here experienced giving alms or what we call “limos” to the poor people? If so,
you can consider yourself a Good Samaritan.

– slide 2 –

In this lesson, you should be able to understand the Parable about the Good Samaritan, to
know the true meaning of Salvation History, and to apply the parable to our own lives.

– slide 3 –

Page 3
The story begins with a lawyer, an expert in the law, asking Jesus, "What must I do to inherit
eternal life?" You'll notice that he asked him to test him, so we can see that the lawyer's
motive wasn't pure, he wanted to take Jesus by surprise.

– slide 4 –

So, Jesus responds with “You are a man of the law, what does the law say, how do you
understand it?” and the lawyer responds saying “Love the Lord your God with all your heart,
soul, strength, and mind, and love your neighbor as yourself.”

And Jesus says to this, “Go and do this, and live.”

– slide 5 –

Then Jesus proceeds to tell them the story about the parable of the good Samaritan. It is about
a traveler who is stripped naked, beaten, and left half dead on the side of the road.

The first man to see the traveler was a Jewish priest, he ignored the man and passed him by,
Second is a Levite that also ignored the man and passed him by.

Finally, a Samaritan comes across the traveler. Despite the fact that Samaritans and Jews
despised each other, the Samaritan still helps the injured man.

– slide 6 –

The parable is said to have been told by Jesus in response to the lawyer’s question "And who
is my neighbor?" The neighbor figure in the parable is the one who shows mercy to the
injured fellow man—that is, the good Samaritan.

The Good Samaritan is a popular and powerful parable that teaches the foundation of what it
means to live a Christian life.

– slide 7 –

The moral of the story is to put aside your differences and help those in need. The Samaritan
was unconcerned about the man's race or religion, he did not hesitate to help the injured man
when he saw him.

There is no greater commandment than to love and care for your neighbor as much as you
love and care for yourself.

The meaning of this parable cannot be understood solely through the Bible. But it is
understood through the teaching of God’s Plan of Salvation.

Page 4
The Lord uses this parable to teach that He is the Good Samaritan, that His atonement is
central to the plan of salvation and heals all wounds, that His Church and priesthood and the
gift of the Holy Ghost have been restored, that living His Gospel changes our hearts and
lives, and that He will return and exalt the faithful.

– slide 8 –

The main point is to be prepared for Christ's return. Only the Father in Heaven knows the day
and hour when the end will come, according to Jesus. Jesus is instructing His disciples to be
vigilant in their walk with the Lord and to be prepared for Christ's second coming at all times.

I hope you learned something for today.

– slide 9 –

With that, for our activity for today.

Create a Reflection Paper about how Salvation in terms of this Parable of the Good Samaritan
and how it changed your perspectives in life in terms of loving and helping people. With the
inspiration of one of the phrases ““ Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
Love your neighbour as yourself.”
