Notes in Applied linguistics

Brumfit 1997, applied linguistics is the theoretical and empirical investigation of real-world problems
in which language is a central issue

Applied linguistics is using what we know, how we know about language. Language related issues,

It is a branch of science; we do not do trial and error because it is science.

It should influence our performance in teaching and also influence our students.

Applied linguistics is an interdisciplinary field of inquiry that addresses a broad range of language-
related issues in order to understand their roles in the lives of individuals and condition in society.

It is a science of culture

Signorini 2004: it is an emergent multidiscipline or trans-discipline, developed on a multidisciplinary


basis of inquiry into language in use, more specifically, into verbal communication within a given
social and or institutional context.
