M.Tech Semester II- First Midterm Exam 2020-21

Time 1 hr Fracture mechanics Max. Marks 20

Question 1. Determine the shape of specimen if G1 is to remain constant with the growth of

crack. The specimen is loaded in the constant load mode. Determine the depth h of the specimen

beyond the crack tip if thickness of the specimen remain constant (B=30mm) the initial crack

length is 50 mm, modulus 207 Gpa and depth of each cantilever 12mm up to the initial crack

length.

Question 2. Define LEFM approach and also explain there advantage and disadvantage ?

Question 3. A large steel plate of an elastic, ideally plastic material (σy= 500Mpa) contain a

through thickness crack of total length 50mm(=2a). at a tension test of the plate crack was found

to start growth in the remote stress σ∞= 300Mpa

At which remote stress σ∞ would a 150mm long crack start to grow? Use the dugdal model of

crack tip opening displacement δ(a) as criterion for crack growth initiation(CTOD criterion) one

has

δ(a)= ln{1/ cos(πσ∞/2σy)}

For the two cases 2a=50mm and 2a =150mm calculate the size (length) ρ of the plastic zone at

the tip when the stress is such that the crack start to propagate.
