Lesson 25 Problems, reading, speaking, vocabulary (collocations)

Students’ Book, pages 34 – 35

Objectives: - to talk about transport problems


- to read a travel book extract quickly for specific information,
- to practice reading strategies for completing sentence gaps in a text,
- to roleplay 'problem' situation,
- to practice using collocations.

- Ex. 1 – Read the key words. Check the meaning and pronunciation in the Mini-dictionary. Use
the key words to answer the questions. (speaking practice)

- Ex. 2 – Read the text quickly (2 minutes). Do not pay attention to the gaps. What problems did
Bill Bryson have?

- Ex. 3 – Read the strategies for filling the sentence gaps.


- Read sentences a –g. Use the strategies to match the sentences (a – g) with the gaps (1 – 6) in
the text. There is one extra sentence.

- Ex. 4 – Read the text again and answer the questions. Check the meaning of unknown
vocabulary in the Mini-dictionary.

- Ex. 5 – Speaking practice: Read the role cards (Student A, Student B) to understand the
situations. Act out the conversations similar to the one in the text. Both people in both situations
are polite. (practise in front of a mirror or phone your friend and act out the situations)

- Ex. 6 – As you know, in English some words often go together (ex. do some exercise) Match
the words from the text. Check the collocations in the Mini-dictionary.

-Bear in mind that both make and have can go with reservation.

- Ex. 7 – Write five sentences using some of the collocations (expressions) from ex. 6.
