How I Came to Meet Your Father

On December 14, 2016, it was announced that Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger will rewrite the
previous spin-pilot, off's retitled How I Met Your Father, with Bays and Thomas acting as executive
producers. Following the signing of new contracts with 20th Century Fox Television that would see both
Aptaker and Berger promoted to executive producers and co-showrunners on This Is Us alongside Dan
Fogelman, it was announced on March 6, 2017 that their completed spec script for How I Met Your
Father would be put on hold in light of their new responsibilities.

Due to the unavailability of Aptaker and Berger, Fox chairman Dana Walden informed Deadline on
August 8, 2017 that the studio was planning a third effort at a spin-off with new writers. It was also
claimed that no concepts from the prior two efforts would be brought over, and that the next attempt
would be built from the ground up. Alison Bennett was chosen to write the spin-off on August 11, 2017,
according to Deadline. It was also revealed that new version will be produced under the same title as
the Aptaker and Berger project, and that Bays and Thomas would serve as executive producers once
again. This version of the project was never completed.

Hulu commissioned the sequel series on April 21, 2021, with Hilary Duff set to portray the main
character Sophie. Aptaker and Berger would serve as creators, writers, and executive producers on the
project. Chris Lowell was reported to have joined the cast as a major part on June 16, 2021. Francia
Raisa, Tom Ainsley, Tien Tran, and Suraj Sharma joined the cast in leading roles on August 10, 2021.
