THE CONTEMPORARY TREND OF PERFORATED SCREENS

ABSTRACT:
Perforated walls, panels, and screens have been used as a way to control the level
of light entering a building or to offer privacy and comfort to its inhabitants for ages.
But the way these screens have been conceived throughout history has changed
dramatically. Although the purposes of perforations have largely remained the same,
the materials and manufacturing methods have evolved tremendously. They are no
longer cut or carved by hand; instead, advances in computer-controlled technology
have demonstrated that these intricate designs can now be imprinted quickly and
easily into a variety of materials for interior or exterior application.

This paper aims to understand the usage of perforated screens as an element of

contemporary architecture and different technologies associated with it. The
objectives of this research are to address how perforated screens have changed in
terms of techniques, technologies, functions, and materials in modern day. The
proposed methodology is intended to cover generalized theories and applied
technologies through literature reviews and case studies.

Thus, the study concludes that the traditional architectural techniques, when
combined with contemporary architectural trends enables future innovations and
advancements in building envelope design in terms of form and performance.
